Hey, in second year of business and thinking of moving back home and commuting for financial reasons. Am from Westmeath so just trying to research the costs of commuting from here. Train looks to be pretty expensive and would cost €20 per day so might have to bare the bus instead. Only have to be in college like 3-4 days per week and don't have many early starts so while commuting will suck, it could be worse. Anyway just wondering does anybody who commutes have any advice, and how much do you pay per week on the commute?

    Thanks

Im currently commuting in from Meath (Navan). It's costing me €45 a week for the bus fare (Thats a 10 Journey pass from Bus Eireann, I only use it 8 times, but it still works out cheaper than 4 return tickets.) It's about 3 hour round trip for me anyway. Here is the typical Bus Eireann fares to and from Dublin. It should give you a ballpark estimate of how much it will cost.

Early mornings are easily the worse part, but you sort of get the hang of it after a while... kinda.

This looks like the most suitable ticket, it does not show a price online so you'll need to find out the price for them from where you live to Dublin:
    Student 10 Journey Weekly Tickets
Student 10 Journey Weekly Tickets are issued to students aged 16 years and over on production of valid Bus Éireann Record Card or current International Student Identity Card (ISIC) or valid Student Identity Card issued by a recognised third-level College in the Republic of Ireland. A full list of colleges [DCU is one of these, so don't worry about that] are available whose Student Identity Cards will be recognised by Bus Éireann for entitlement to student fares.

I'm guessing you'll also need a Dublin Bus ticket from the City Centre to DCU, these are your cheapest options:
    Student 5 Day Rambler €15.00
    • Valid for unlimited travel for 5 non consecutive days
    • Valid on Dublin Bus scheduled services including Xpresso (excluding Airlink, Nitelink, Tours, Special Events and Private Contract services)
    • Student Travelcard required

    Student 30 Day Rambler €75.00
    • Valid for unlimited travel for 30 non consecutive days
    • Valid on Dublin Bus scheduled services including Xpresso (excluding Airlink, Nitelink, Tours, Special Events and Private Contract services)
    • Student Travelcard required
      Buy Now

These are now now non-consecutive smartcards, so you can use them for just a few days each week without losing days.

But, unlike Bus Éireann, your DCU card is not good enough for Dublin Bus, if you don't a Student Travelcard, see -- http://www.studenttravelcard.ie/

It may be worth asking this question again over on Commuting and Transport -- give your full journey details, name exactly where you're going to and from, how many days a week etc. They guys over there have a good bit of pooled knowledge.

Thanks guys for the helpful info. There is also a citylink bus that goes from where I live to Dublin airport every few hours and AFAIK it doesn't have many stop overs so it is quite quick. Dublin bus might be a bit more reliable though as they are pretty much on the hour until 10pm. The only problem is on a Thursday I have a 9am start so may need to get the early bird train up on that one day if I am goign to make the lecures.
