Boards.ie iPhone App

So the iPhone has been out over two years now since the 2g and I'm surprised that there hasn't been a boards.ie app for it, I'd love to give it a go, but one I don't have a mac, two don't have the apple coding experience and three boards probably wouldn't let me have access to the db to test it!

I wouldn't mind learning the code to do it (would probably benefit me in the long run!!) but I ain't got the moola to go off and buy a mac to do it!

So who's gonna put there hand up first to give it a go or loan me a MacBook!!!

There's no point in coding a specific app. Boards can easily implement a script, which will allow Tapatalk to display the forum in a condensed format.

I use a similar script (TouchBB)for my miniclub.ie site, as a lot of users have iPhones. It makes connecting to the forum really simple.

Yes but it would be a lot better if there was an iPhone app with push notifications for pms and thread updates etc, specifically designed in and around boards

Why does it need to be designed for boards? Boards is just a forum running vbulletin. Do a search on the appstore for vbulletin, there are a number of apps which connect directly to the database, and format it for the iPhone.

The only thing they don't do is push, and TBH, I'd go mental if I had push running on a forum like this. If you have threads subscribed, you can just use a push mail client, which will notify you of mails relating to PMs and threads.

How do you make a simple icon and put a link to boards behind it, don't need anything fancy just a quick link, i've been trying to find a tutorial for the last hour..

The only forum client I can find on the AppStore is tapatalk which is a paid client and boards would have to subscribe to use it.

Can find any vbulletin apps on the app store and there doesn't seem to be too much on cydia, and personally I don't wanna have to pay for something.

Also boards mobile functionality and usability isn't great for the iPhone and the full site is a bit overwhelming for the iPhone.

I'm not looking for a debate as to why or why not it shouldn't be done, I'm looking to see if there's anyone interested in doing it, so back on topic please

Open the site you want, hit the + or favourites button, and add to home screen. You won't have a custom icon, but you will have a shortcut that looks like an app.

just go to boards.ie or m.boards.ie
press the + in the middle at the bottom of the screen and click add to home screen

The forum is vbulletin with a mysql enterprise database from what I gather

Boards don't have to pay Tapatalk, they just have to install a script. A 2 second search for vbulletin returns :

If you design an icon, follow this guide, and ask Conor (One of the devs) really really nicely, it's possible :

All paid and just checked kaytri, boards.ie is not kaytri readable apparently. Leaves us back with no free apps.

That's great, let's leave it at that, I'm talking about deeloping one for the fun of it, I would give it a go but don't have a mac, which is required to use the apple sdk.

I've got Snow Leopard running on VM Player on my machine. Would that work? It's pretty much a full Mac. If it does work, VM Player is free, and Snow Leopard is very cheap.

Probably would, I'll check up the spec of the sdk and snow leopard vs my machine here and see if I can get it running.

I didn't realise that vmware was supporting mac vms ont windows hosting environments

There's a load of unofficial hacks for it, there's a vmx config you can download which will allow you to run Snow Leopard. Google it, there's a few how-to's doing the rounds.

It's exactly what I had in mind. A gradient fill from dark blue to light blue from the top left to bottom right would finish it nicely.

If you use two fingers instead of one to scroll in the message pane, you can scroll down to the end.
