Silicone Contacts?

    Hi there,

I am a regular wearer of Focus Dailies, and probably wear them for 12+ hours a day, 7 days a week (with no discomfort)

I was at the optician today, and although my eyes are healthy, he recommended either cutting down the amount of time I use them, or using the more expensive silicone contact lenses, which allow more oxygen onto the eye.

Does anyone use these? Do you think it's worth paying almost twice the cost for these lenses? I know your eyesight is priceless, but I don't want to be throwing money down the drain either.

Would love your opinions! BTW, the lenses are around 150 euro for 3 months, as opposed to about 90!

    Thanks!

Maybe he can see that over wearing the focus dailies is having an effect on your eyes even though you have no discomfort.
7 days a week is a lot to wear your lenses, possibly your eyes are being deprived of oxygen due to the wearing time and thats why he recommended the silicone ones.

They are the best ones- hence the price.

    Thanks for the reply.

If there was an obvious reason to pay the extra, then I'd have no qualms, but he did say that there was no evidence of the lenses having done any damage to my eyes. I guess he was offering the alternative as a preventative measure given the amount of time I wear them.

Hmm hard to know what to do. Do you know any decent brands for the Silicone ones?

I would say its more of a preventative measure alright.
Most people would take a day off a week from lenses and wear their glasses just to give their eyes a break.
His way of thinking would be your eyes arent getting that break they need so to compensate- use the silicone ones.
Pronlonged deprivation of oxygen can cause blood vessels to grown into the cornea, if this happens, decreased wear may lead to them to disappear but the risk of infection is high and as its irreversible- contact lens use would be ceased and glasses would have to be worn.

Only daily silicone hydrogel ones are called Tru eye- for 3 months of these its 165e.
02 optix are silicone hydrogel monthly ones- for 3 months with solution is 66e.

Seeing as you wear your lenses alot, I would recommend switching to monthly ones- better value.

i use purevision for the last 4 years. find them great. i used to suffer badly from dry eyes and have astigmatism, so my optician recommended these, as you could wear them day and night for up to 30days(even sleep in them). i wear them for up to 14 hours a day with no problem but i take them out every evening.

PureVision is a silicon-based monthly disposable lens, designed for use night and day for up to 30 days. Continuous wear lenses are made from silicon hydrogel, a material with very high oxygen permeability levels, allowing lenses to be worn continuously for up to 30 days. However, the length of time for which the lenses should be worn varies from person to person, so ask your optician about how you should wear these lenses

I started wearing the trueye silicone daily a few months ago but found them very uncomfortable. My Optician switched me over to Clariti 1 Day which is a new silicone daily. They are very comfortable and I can really notice a difference, i wear them most days 12 hours +. They cost me around 140 for 3 months

i started using the silicone clariti 1 dailies instead of normal monthlies last week and have to say i love them :) they've given me better vision then the monthlies and my eyes are less dry so i can wear them for longer, but if you're happy enough with your current lens then unless you want to switch and there's persuasive advice from your optician to do so for eye health then i don't see why you should change necessarily if price is the main consideration. most opticians will give you a free trial set of the silicone ones if you're considering a switch, that's the only way you'll get an idea if they suit you better and justify the expense. i only wear contacts for nights out and i'm not on direct debit so 30 pairs cost me 70 euro but focus dailies would have been 65 so not a huge increase for a lot more comfort!
