Best way to get the .ie domain I want?

    Hey guys,

I would like to buy a .ie domain name (have one in mind, and it's available). What is the easiest way to get it - I know you have to jump through a few hoops to get it, not like with a .com.

I don't have a business, am starting from scratch. What is the easiest way of showing that you 'deserve' to be granted the name? I understand if you can prove that you have invested time/effort etc into the concept that this proves you may deserve it - is this right? Something like having spent and invested significant time on the concept etc..? Kind of a chicken and egg scenario as I want to get the site up and running asap and can't do that without the domain name..?!

    Any advice appreciated.

Best thing IMO is to register a business name with the CRO thats the same or similar to the domain you want giving a description of the activiteis the business will be assocaited with. Then buy the domain and furnish a letter saying that you have a business name with the CRO Ref XYZ that is directly related to the website which will form a core element of your business. Costs only €20 to register a name with CRO online now I think and is a lot faster to process than previously.

It will be very difficult to get the domain if you are starting from scratch without the CRO registration.

Cool yep was meant to mention that it seems the best way is to register with the CRO with a company name - I will check it out but do you know is there much involved with registering with them?

You will be pleasantly surprised. Easy process. I think it costs 15 euro for the company reg. If Dublin based its best drop into CRO offices (14 Parnell Square)
Whats the domain name your looking for?:D

reg online with the cro (www.core.ie|)
fill in the 'business names' form online
at the end of that process you will print out a page
    sign it
Put it in an envelope and slip in a chickens for €20
    post
then you can check online for at the status.
As soon as you have you RBN number you can get then get your domain name (hopefully).

I'd get the process started as from filing to getting RBN is getting a little lengthy.

Cheers all! Looks like a surprisingly easy process! Presume you pay the fee by postal money order or something?

Get the RBN for a company at the moment is apparently taking up to 9 weeks, but it only takes about 2 weeks for a sole trader.

If you get a receipt from the CRO then you can use that to get your domain name with most of the irish hosting providers. Once you get the RBN you just send it on to them to confirm it.

Depends who you deal with prhaps but coming up to Christmas the CRO were back logged and they agreed with the IEDR who give out the domains that they would issue receipts which in turn would allow someone to register a domain and not have to wait for weeks. Blacknight even posted about it here before and Im sure its still in place.

two things - my hosting service would point blank accept the RBN! Not the receipt (wans't my first site there!)
Second, Gov departments a little slow these days due to wage disputes.

Do you mean they would only accept a RBN?

    Exact quote form email:

"At this time the Domain Registry do not accept submission numbers"

Now, that's my experience, b4 xmas (good bit) shop around - ask that question first to the hosting company - "can i get a domain registered without the RBN?"

It may be out of their hands

You want to ask them can you reserve the domain name with a receipt from your application to the CRO for an RBN. You have to make it clear you have applied and have a receipt otherwise you will be told you need the RBN. This was what it was like coming up to christmas, it could have changed since but im sure if you contact the hosting companies and ask you will find out easily enough. Blacknight were allowing this to the best of my knowledge so maybe try them.

The IEDR can be a real pain in the hole to deal with though.

One one occasion, my friend registered a business name (that nobody else had registered). On his behalf, I sent in a scan of the submission, the receipt number, a fax from his bank saying that he intended to operate in Ireland under that trading name, and they still didn't accept it. Luckily the RBN was approved a day or two before the 30 day window closed.

You can request the domain and it will be "held" for about 28 days (used to be 30, but I think they reduced it to 28)

As for the entire RBN vs no RBN vs receipt thing

    CRO were issuing receipts.

    IEDR were accepting them

CRO then decided to stop issuing receipts

    BUT

If you can provide a screenshot of the CRO submission I *think* you can still get the domain registration accepted.

    HTH

Cool thanks, well I sent off the RBN request to the CRO today. My domain provider (I haven't gone to register it yet) said that I can send them on a receipt from the CRO no problem. So I reckon I will call up the CRO on Friday and ask them for a receipt which I'll then send to my domain provider who will then look to secure the domain.

Does that sound like the way forward?

If they said they accept the receipt then yup thats the way forward.
