Surely it'd be cheaper and a lot less hassle to buy over there?(Presuming you would sell your current motor) Considering cars are much cheaper in general state side. And having a RHD car over there would mean it's worthless over there. Unless it was something rare, i can't see the logic in it.
Perhaps i'm missing something here, but that's my 2c

I can't think of any (sane) reason to do this.

It can be done, but it will be quite a bit of trouble.

If it is an Irish car, and RHD, then I would only do it if it were a very special car.

You may be required to prove that the model of car has been crash tested to American standards.

Additionally, you will have to pass an emissions test there (if it is a diesel, you will most likely fail regardless of how clean it is).

The car will then have to be registered with your local Dept of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Their rules vary on the state you are importing to.

I would recommend that you do a google search for "grey market imports".

Forgot to mention that if it is a non-standard car (that is unknown in the US market) insurance may be impossible to find.

I don't think this is necessary for personal imports, i.e. if you're moving there and bringing the car with you. But regardless, it does sound like too much hassle unless it's something really special.

I haven't bought it yet but was thinking of an estate that's common in America. Was going to use it to send the few things I have here back. then sell the car on. Was wondering if they had RORO "roll on roll off" ship that can that picks up cars in Ireland or would the UK be the best bet. I haven't investigated what fee's the Federal government would want on import but the state should'nt be a problem, emmissions wouldn't be an issue. It cost 1600 us dollars to ship stuff over 4 years ago if I could get a car or jeep back for less than that price, I'd sell it on to offset the shipping.

If your sending stuff to the US you have to sign a document saying that you've owned it in your own country for 1 year prior to importation (expect for personal items like clothes and cosmetics).
