Taxi Driver Sequel

Martin Scorsese and Lars von Trier are reportedly teaming up for a sequel to Taxi Driver, says Hollywood Elsewhere.
A report has surfaced in Danish film magazine Ekko claiming that the duo will bring back Robert De Niro to reprise his role as Travis Bickle, a socially maladjusted cab driver who fantasises about cleaning up the streets of New York.
Taxi Driver, written by Paul Schrader and released in 1976, is considered one of the most iconic films in modern American cinema. Its success helpled to push De Niro and Scorsese onto Hollywood's A-list.
Scorsese has previously voiced his admiration for von Trier's work, naming the controversial Danish filmmaker's Breaking The Waves in his top ten movies of the '90s.

I dont think a sequel would work tbh

Meh, the original is overrated anyway so it wouldnt bother me

Taxi Driver is one of the greatest movies of all time. If Marty decides to make a sequel I will pull a Travis Bickle myself and give him the "pimp treatment".

    Leave it be.

A sequel isn't going to take anything away from the original. To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing what they make of it. I can't imagine it being any good, but they may be able to surprise us with it.

It was originally Paul Schrader who approached them about a "continuation". It'd be interesting enough to see, with Schrader/Scorcese/De Niro on board. Wouldn't be sure about Von Trier though.

At least its not a remake by Eli Roth or that guy from Watchmen.

Awful idea, but if Lars von Trier - even his worst movies are fascinating - is involved at least we can guarantee it will be bat**** insane. I say go for it.

What I've heard is that the film is in fact planned in a similiar vein to the recent Bad Lieuntent film.

This has to be bull. Taxi Driver represented social issues that were rife in the US at the time it was made. Its not something you can just lash out a sequel to.

    Besides, Marty dont do sequels.

    Less atrocious though hopefully!

    Apperently its all bull****:

Fact: Lars von Trier is Not Remaking Taxi Driver - Film School Rejects http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/fact-lars-von-trier-is-not-remaking-taxi-driver.php#ixzz0fjCjMK9v
Even though he did meet Martin Scorsese this week in Berlin, director Lars von Trier is not going to be remaking, rebooting, rehashing or retwisting the Scorsese classic Taxi Driver. That is, if someone like Peter Aalbaek is to be believed. In the opinion of this writer, Aalbaek is the perfect person to ask, as he is von Trier’s business partner.

Aalbeck told ScreenDaily yesterday that “what is written” by the various sources behind this story “is not true.” He also went as far as to call the rumors “rubbish.”

This bit of news comes with the bittersweet tinge of dashed curiosity. After reading Robin’s report yesterday, I was later drawn to the idea — what if von Trier were to take the Werner Herzog/Bad Lieutenant approach and make something completely new, but loosely attached. Perhaps take the idea of Taxi Driver to a new setting. It could be a fruitful storytelling experiment. Alas, it is a pipe dream now — and probably for the best.

There's always been rumours over a Taxi Driver sequel and they've always been stamped out by Scorsese!

I'd rather see a sequel to Leap Year than expect this!

The Lars von Trier part sounds like BS to me.
Shutter Island had its world premiere in Berlin a few days ago and as with all world premiers the film's major players began running the press gauntlet. One of the first juicy bits of news to emerge from this came from Reuters (via Film School Rejects) who pulled some choice quotes from director Martin Scorsese regarding a new gangster-world collaboration with long time friend Robert De Niro, "There's no doubt about that. We're working on something like that, but it's from the vantage point of older men looking back, none of this running around stuff."

So, no mention of Taxi Driver (which starred De Niro as the now iconic Travis Bickle) or Lars Von Trier there, just confirmation that Scorsese and De Niro want to work together again. That's interesting enough on its own, but things get even more interesting when the aforementioned Danish article comes into play. Read Google's translation of Ekko's article here, but if the language is correct, their source claims that Scorsese and the notorious Von Trier will be teaming up together for a project along the experimental lines of the Von Trier-instigated The Five Obstructions.

Indeed, Mr. Internet Man. I knew it was unlikely, but the prospect of Von Trier getting his hands on an established franchise was bound to be an entertaining cluster****. However, the two of them teaming up for anything could be interesting.

I'm sure you would have to have seen to first leap year to get all the subtle plot references that would permeate the sequels deep and thoughtful subtext..... :)

I think that great films should just be left well enough alone.
It's not as if they are going to be better.
    What's next, The Godfather?

This one is always flying around. It's up there with the Stone Roses/Smiths reforming rumours. Everpresent.

Not short of big social issues at present. Failure of capitalism, recession, big business etc. and the Iraq war of course.

The pointless Godfather sequel has already been done:P

And, while Marty might not do sequel (yet), he does do dodgy remakes and hasn't made a truly exceptional film in years...

The Departed was a great film.

Travis Bickle would have been murdered 30 years ago.A sequel would have Harold or Kumar driving a cab round New York doing something hilarious.

if anyone could make a Sequel Martin scorsese could do the impossible.

I really have to say he could it is a strange film to make a sequel for but if they did it would be amazing.

And the antichrist directoring it wow it would be the crazyiest film ever and he would make it 10 times as mad as the first film.

all a sequel to Taxi Driver could do is tarnish the original

it could never re capture or live up to the original

    please dont do it!
