Whats the story behind the Toyota advert thats been on the side of the Opera House for yonks... You'd think that if any company was going to have its name on display in Cork it would be Ford, because of the old link...

Ford can bugger right off with the amount of people they laid off at the time, and the effect on other businesses who depended on them for work. Henry Ford was an asshole too.

In fairness Ireland isn't a great place to make cars, not a huge on shore market. Also the folks that worked there got good innings out of the place.

Tobe fair......it's only advertising not employment. At least their giving something!

AFAIK the owner of Toyota donated the money for the refurbishment of the Opera House back in the late 80's. He also payed for the Language centre in the North Monastery.

Old Henry had a bit of a Nazi love-in back in the day and had a security force in Detroit who weren't afraid to knock a few heads around or open fire on employees.

Wouldn't be a bad spot for an electronic sign? That concrete 'block' is fairly ugly as it is, so nothing would make it worse.

You want conspicuous advertising to dominate the view and intrude in your field of vision? Very odd.
The advertisers have surely triumphed when the public is asking for more adverts. Easier to ignore a blank stone tower I'd say.

It really needs something to improve the look the quayside facade. It's looking ok from the square since the glass frontage was built on.

Previously it definitely looked more like the "Opera Warehouse".

The Toyota sign is probably paying for a chunk of the budget.

What if it was advertising to promote the Opera House and the various cultural event they'll be hosting?

Ford was truly a horrible person.
A true pioneer no doubt (think he brought forward the 'assembly line' idea as well), but just a terrible individual.

Ford wasn't the first to use the assembly line for cars, nor was Ford himself the one who thought of introducing it to the Ford Motor Co. although they did it better than most of the competition.

Thanks. Wasn't sure if they had introduced it or not.
They did it better, but at a huge cost to the employees; they'd a huge turnover due to the repetitive nature of the job (and the hours worked), which may not have been unique to Ford either.
