Driving test - Insurance

Hello I’ve just received my Irish Learner Permit, now preparing for Driving test for full licence. Insurance would cost a fortune for me so my intention is to buy Insurance after obtaining full licence. Is it possible to have Driving test without valid Insurance, using say Instructor’s car or my wife’s car? Learning to drive is not a problem, my driving is reasonably good, taking 3-4 lessons should do the job. Thanks

You would be insured in your instructor's car.

You could investigate how much it would cost to be insured as a named driver on your wife's car. Depending on your age, her driving record, type of car, etc., it might not work out too expensive.

It cost me €38.10 to get put on as a named driver on my mother's insurance for the year, though admittedly, I am female and over 40, which helped as I wouldn't be seen as a big risk, even as a learner.

you will also need to have your irish learner's permit for 6 months before you can do your full test.

If you hire your instructor's car, it'll be covered by his insurance. This can be pretty pricey though, usually around €60 - €100, and sometimes they wont give it to you unless you take a pre-test too.
