Problem with Electrics - Audi A4 2002

    Hi guys

    Have a 2002 Audi A4... 1.9 TDI Sport

Within the last week, I have started having trouble with the electrics

    1) The light that comes on above your head when you unlock the car, stays on after you turn the engine on, and when you get out and lock the car. I had to manually switch this off

    2) The indicators used to flash when I locked the car... no more... However they still flash when I unlock the car

    3) The button to lock/unlock car on the inside has stopped working (and is no longer lit up

    4) The electric windows have stopped working (the button on driver side is no longer lit up/the passenger side still lights up) but windows do not work on either side

    5) The electric mirrors have also stopped working

Thats all I found so far.....

I checked all the fuses... none blown as far as I can see

I have no money to go to a garage or mechanic... So I need to fix this myself.... and I know NOTHING about cars...except how to drive them... (A bit like Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder)

    Any help is greatly appreciated....

ok i hate to be the bearer of bad news here but ive seen these similar
    issues with the vw passat..
both cars have the same bulk head under the bonnet around where the battery
is and what happens is the water drains block and water gets in through a rubber grommet.and literally lashes into the car.
as i said ive seen this on a couple of cars now.. there is a module located under the passanger seat that controls alot of electrics.
what id suggest is pull back the carpet at say wear the passengers feet would be and have a good feel underneath as the carpets in german cars are so thick you wont just feel the damp from the top..
if its sopping wet i think its time to start removing seats...
this is kinda a worse case scenario but its defo where i'd start looking
    hope this helps!

    Are your carpets wet?

If not I'd imagine your problem is more than likely a broken wire going to the drivers door between the pillar and the door!

OP i can feel your pain. The exact same thing happened to me on Saturday. Everything you mentioned with the only difference being that my window was half way down. After a bit of searching online i narrowed it down to a couple of things. I took the door panel off yesterday checked all the connections but everything was fine. Had to take the motor off just to manually put the window up.

I had already checked the fuses and checked the comfort thing under the seat but they all seemed fine. Only problem with removing the thing under the seat was that it threw up the air bag light so no doubt that will have to be reset. Next step was to check, as barry says, the wiring going from the door to the car. That black rubber protection that holds all the wiring could be the answer. Didnt have time yesterday to remove it but hopefully today i will. To be honest i am expecting to see some broken wiring inside it. I will post later when i have removed it to let you know how i get on!!

    Hi 50 euro

Please let me know how you get on

Had a quick feel at lunch time (sounds dirty) but I cannot feel any dampness....

The fact that the passenger side window doesnt work either, does that suggest that it wouldnt be the wiring between the car to the drivers door?

I would imagine they are all connected. The problems i have are, which i imagine are identical to yours:
Mirror switch not working, windows on all the doors not working, interior light stays on, car doesn't recognise that the drivers door is closed, indicator lights flash when key fob is used to open the door but doesn't when closing(this is down to the fact the car thinks the drivers door is still open). I can only imagine that the problem is broken wires between the door. If it is a cheap fix will sort it but only for awhile. I would imagine around €100 to get it done properly but that is if that is the problem.

To be honest i don't fancy taking it to my local Audi garage so i am hoping that this is the problem!

Sure lets see how you get on before I start my work :)

So, checked the wiring and nothing. Surprised actually. Back to the drawing board it is. Anyone else any idea what this could be?

OP My car (audi A4) experiened some of the exact same problems. Car wouldnt flash when I locked car but it would flash when I open the car and then the fob gave up so I have to lock with the key now which is a nuisance. elecric mirrors not working also. Alarm malfunctioned. Arghh!

There is a control unit attached to drivers door window motor which controls alot of those things. From the soft touch boot release to all the electric windows & the central locking.

I have all the symptoms now.... I hadnt noticed that the drivers door wasnt locking..

I guess I need to take a look at this.

Is this something that could be done myself or do I need to go to a garage....

Get a some with vagcom to run a diagnostic on your car. Its sounds like the convienience control modue (unit) (CCU) under the passengers seat as suggested is at fault.

The diagnostic will either confirm this on not. If it doesnt it will give you a clue to what is causing it.

If it is the CCU is beyond repair (due to water damage) these can be purchased off the interweb for about 80euro (they are about 300euro or more from the main dealer).

If you cant get someone with VAGCOM the USB to ODB2 leads are about 20euro from the internet and all you need is a laptop with vagcom shareware installed (it is also free off the internet).

I have mine booked in with an audi independent specialist garage for the end of the month. I'll post what they find anyway. Hopefully you get something sorted before then. Mine has stayed the same so hopefully wont get worse between now and then. First thing he felt was for dampness under the passenger seat when he had a quick look at it. He said he would run it through vag com when he gets it. Hopefully it isn't a serious problem. I reckon now anyway its the comfort control unit. Hopefully!

    Hi folks

    Just an update on this

Finally got around to checking this out myself

I check the wiring harness between my car and the drivers side door

I peeled back the rubber that protects the wiring, and when I got access and touch the wires, i can hear the sizzling/crackling noise that you get with loose or damaged wires that are still making a connection

when I press the wires in a certain direction... everything works again

Now I'm delighted I know what it is.. just need to fix it now

Is it possible to fix this small part or do I have to replace the entire wiring harness as explained in the following link :

    http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2379267

I'm hoping its easier than this as this part cost quite a bit for the guy who posted this message

yes its easy to repair just put in a crimp connection to rejoin the broken wire no need to replace the wire, there is probably 2 - 3 gone, the brown one which is the earth wire is one of the first to go in there,
if your not confident to do it any auto electrician would do it or a decent mecahnic.

    Hey lads,

Sorry to bump this old thread, just wondering if you found out 100% that it was a problem with the wires between the car and door?

Have similar problems, opened a new thread here:

    Cheers !

    Hi Spy Guy

The problem was with the wiring loom on the drivers door

I got someone to take the door off and repair all the wires and it has been fine ever since
