UPC Movies on Demand

IRISH film fans could be able to watch Hollywood movies on their televisions before they are released in the cinemas before the end of the year.

Cable company UPC is planning to launch a "video on demand" service for its Irish customers.

Viewers can already access the RTE Player or TV3's Catch Up service on the internet. UPC -- known as Chorus NTL -- will provide a similar catch-up service through its boxes. It is believed that news and current affairs shows are the most commonly accessed shows on TV catch-up services.

Pre-release movies and other films are likely to be part of UPC's planned new offering, according to sources. UPC already operates a new release movies on demand service in the Netherlands, with prices beginning at 99¢ per movie, compared to a €9 cinema admission.

    Thats brilliant news

I hope this turns out to be correct, but I doubt the 99c per movie is correct, which makes me a little suspicious now?

    We'll see I guess.

Anyone from UPC like to comment?

That's some claim. VOD is one thing, but that's really farfetched.

I'd settle for some red button developments meself - those ads on the Beeb seem to taunt us cable viewers ;)

I'd be more happier if they could add more HD channels.

I agree but it would be nice if it were true. To really compete with Sky they'll need to get innovative,

It is 99c in the Netherlands, not likely it will be that price here

Money makes the world go around have you visited a multiplex lately?

Cinemas are empty for most showings.

I would rather pay to watch a new release in HD at home rather then sit in some rat hole with scumbags on their phones.

If this will bring in more money for the studios you can bet it will happen.

I think this report is incorrect. Makes sense if it read before the movies are released on DVD. I'm not aware of any on-demand system which allows movies to be watched before cinema release. I welcome the rte player.

You expect them to allow movies on PPV before cinema and DVD? Get real.

I'd be happy enough with having them within a short period of the DVD release. The studios make a huge premium on newly released DVDs. They won't canabalise that. Even having a wide choice of non new movies would be cool.

They're not going to be on PPV before Cinema or DVD. There's currently a row going on in the UK between Odeon & Disney because Disney want to reduce the DVD release to 12 weeks from it's current 18 (these things are set in stone) for Alice In Wonderland.

Odeon & another chain (can't remember which) are threatning not to screen it which means it not appearing on 92% of screens in the UK (& IRL), including UCI.

So there's no way in hell the above is gonna happen

Don't see how this could work.

I would prefer to see UPC get the defence and offence sorted out before going for the unrealistic hail marys.
