Anybody on UPC and having Vidzone troubles over the past week or so. I don't use Vidzone that much, maybe once every month or so but fired it up on Saturday night as I was having a few friends over.

It popped up a message saying that it wasn't available in my country.

    Very strange.

Now I know there were times with UPC had issues and sent everything through Amsterdam but I thought those days were over. www.speedtest.net says I'm in Ireland.

At a loss and can only put it down to UPC or Vidzone. Anyone?

Its a PSN issue, I'm with UPC too and it's nothing to do with them. Vidzon like PSN just works when the monkeys on the other end decide they will work for free.

Emm, I think it is a UPC issue. Vidzone was working fine for me until UPC were doing upgrades in my area and my internet was down for a while. When the internet came back up Vidzone wasn't working with the 'Fatal Error' about being in the wrong region. I've been onto Vidzone about this problem and they got me to try a lot of different solutions, and in the end they said they think it's the ISP as they've had a few people email with the region problem, they were all from Ireland and they were all with UPC.

Thanls. Sounds like my issue. I had an "outage" last weekend and I had to get on to them. But I don't understand how speednet.net detects me as Ireland. Unless Vidzone use a different geo database.

Yeah I thought it was an IP geolocation thing too but speedtest and RTEplayer detect me as Irish from the PS3. Anyways, I'll be sure to post here if/when Vidzone get back to me with a solution. Their email is ps-problems@vidzone.tv.

I just heard back from Vidzone [below] so if anyone has contacted them recently, please get back to them with your results.

    Subject: Ireland VidZone Problem

    Hi,

Sorry to hear you are having problems accessing VidZone. We’ll try to get VidZone working for you so you can access all the new music videos and exciting exclusives we have.

Unfortunately we’ve had this problem reported 3 times now but no one has got back to us after the below email I usually send out.
If you could PLEASE try the below and email me back 's EMeven if it works it would be most appreciated as I need to specifically know which ISP this is with as we think it is a problem with the ISP. If we don’t know which one it is though we can’t pass it on to the relevant people to get fixed.

There are a few solutions we have found that fix multiple problems.
The first thing to try is to uninstall the application AND delete the VidZone saved game data from the Game Data Utility on the Cross media bar under Game. Then reinstall the application.

If you have done this, check that you are using your ISP’s DNS and Not OpenDNS. Sometimes this needs to be entered manually.

The third thing to check is that your router has UPNP Disabled.

We are currently testing a fourth solution, which we are unsure about as we have not been able to confirm if this definitely works or not. Any response you could give to let us know if this works would be greatly appreciated. It is as follows: Lower your MTU value to 1400 in your router settings.

If this doesn’t work don’t hesitate to get back in touch and we’ll continue from there. If you do need to get back in touch please include your Playstation model, your IP address, your wireless router, your ISP, if the problem happens every time, your country, and your PSNID nationality, even if you included this information in the first email.

    Many Thanks,

    ** some guy **

Yeah that's the first email I got, although the opener was a little different as I think the guy was desperate for an answer from me and he knew which ISP was the problem. Anywhoo, that must be an automated email now as I tried all those steps and it didn't work, and I got back to them with all my info (including the ISP stuff). That was on Saturday though so it wasn't that long ago.

Now ya's know how i've felt since the darn thing was launched :D

Hopefully this "4th fix" your man was on about will help me too.

I didn't either until recently. However I don't use it that regularly so can't pin it down to a specific date. Last time I used it was around Christmas.

Actually, thinking about it, their possible remedies don't seem to be right at all. Change DNS, uPNP, MTU etc. These are all things that may help resolve connection issues, not effect geo ip things. All Vidzone [at the server] needs is my IP Address.

My DNS, uPNP or ANY other setting on my router [possibly bar a sneaky Proxy setting] should be irrelevant.

Anywho, I'll try their wants. So far chaning back to stock DNS had no effect. Nor completely removing and installing again. In fact, upon installing, it detected a newer version, downloaded, installed and THEN gave me the Fatal Error again.

I really don't hold much hope unless they have other ideas.

I tried all of VidZones suggestions but to no avail, as I thought. Waiting to hear back from them but it will probably be tomorrow.

I hope it's not a UPC issue. If It is, that is a harder hill to climb.

I'm not on UPC and will be able to check later on this evening.

    Working fine for me.

Cheers. That more or less says that, then. Better ring UPC tomorrow. A talk I'm not happy about having.

My mate who is on UPC has been on it all day. I'm on Eircom and can't use it.

That's very interesting. That would make be think it's a VidZone problem. Eircom IP's are definitely Irish, I would reckon. Like, it's not as if eircom can mess that up.

I'll ask VidZone what Geo IP database they use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

I am now almost convinced it's a VidZone problem. I've googled a few geo ip databases and all bar one says I'm in Ireland. The one that didn't said that it didn't know where I was.

    http://www.ip2location.com/demo.aspx
    http://www.trackipaddresses.com/database/#demo
    http://www.maxmind.com/app/lookup_city

And this one couldn't "locate" me.

I used Vidzone two or three times before christmas while using OpenDNS and it was fine. The last time I tried to use it I had gone back to Eircom's DNS and it wouldn't work, maybe a month or so ago. I've had a new modem since then so I'll check it out when I get home and see what the story is now.
Vidzone been almost nothin but hassle for me since it started tbh.

If it was a Vidzone problem then it would surely not work for anyone.

I should have said, my Eircom IP wasn't giving me a region problem that I could see, just a connection error.

I think I was on Nat 3 at the time, so I guess that's what it was, but UPC seems ok, by the looks of things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

I just checked there and it worked fine for me. I'm on UPC but I'm using opendns since I got server errors pretty much every 10 minutes until I switched to it. Maybe switching to opne dns would help? I got that ip location issue a few times before I used open dns, and the ip is in Ireland regardless of the dns server, so it's more than likely UPC's fault.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

Yup, I've always used OpenDNS and never had a problem until recently.
Yup, I know my IP is Ireland. Every online record states this.

When I say it's probably a VidZone problem, the fact that some UPC customers can use it and some Eircom users can't... It can't be the ISP. The way I se it, it has to be local configuration or VidZone.

Still waiting to hear back from VidZone. I wish I had a hub so I could run wireshark to trace the info to and from VidZone. This would probably tell me definitively.

Hmmmmm, maybe internet sharing from my laptop :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

RangeR, cheers for those IP locators. All of em except one tracked me to Ireland, and Maxmind even got my town right which has never happened with a locater before :P Might try download Vidzone again and see if it's working now. Doubtful, but still!

EDIT: Nope, still getting a fatal error. I'm presuming it's vidzone's problem.

Im also having this issue, and im on UPC, typically when I wanted to use Vidzone....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

Vidzone now appear to be ignoring me. It has only been four days but they were very quick to answer my first email saying that it was a fault on my end.

Wireshark didn't show up much other than I can see it connect and obtain a secure cert then all communication was encrypted. But it DID connect and then the server [encrypted] reported the FATAL ERROR.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

Vidzone, indirectly said that they aren't really looking into it. In that they didn't answer any of my questions or gave any indication as to if the issue is with my ISP or their server.

    Bad form, I say.

Im on UPC & vidzone is working, another house 10 min drive away is on UPC & is getting the "only availible in....." error

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

OK, then can I ask people for their [semi] IP Address and denote whether Vidzone works or not for you. The more info we have, maybe the easier it will be to find a problem.

    Mine is : 109.255.175.xxx

I'm not formatting my PS3. If what you say is my problem too, then it's a VidZone issue.

Vidzone is working fine for me now, they must have sorted whatever was wrong. (And by working I mean I didn't do anything, just fired it up 5 minutes ago and it was working).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

Confirmed. It's working for me now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,046 ✭✭✭✭L'prof

Just digging this up as Vidzone has been revamped. Is it completely different now, as in you have to watch these "TV channels" rather than setting up a playlist? I don't think you can skip tracks either! I'm not overly impressed with it so far anyway and it seems to be a step backwards, what does anyone else think?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,645 ✭✭✭Daemos

You can still set-up playlists, it just isn't the main option anymore.

Right you are Ted, took me a while to find it though and it seems slower than usual but, maybe it was always this sluggish?

I can't say I think much of the TV Channels anyway and the whole interface could do with an update.
