How Play TV Works

Conor Pope has an excellent article about this in the Irish Times today. According to the figures given him by TV3's commercial manager, Pope says, "the programme should have revenue of around €2.5 million annually".

That works out at fifty grand a week. Considering how low the running costs must be, that must be largely profit. The presenters are presumably on something close to minimum wage, and the studio costs would be not much more than a can of paint and a 200 watt light bulb.

This is assuming the TV3 guy's figures are accurate, which I would not be hugely confident about.

EDIT: I meant Play TV, obviously. Plat TV is beyond reproach. Mods, feel free to render me literate.

I doubt the presenters would be on less than 30-40k apiece annually. At least I would've thought so, with travel back and forth etc.

would want to on more than minimum wage for making a tit of yourself on a nightly basis!

I think if I was one of the presenters I would be happy on low wages if it provided me with a stepping stone up to more respectable programming - such as pornography perhaps.

Just recently they have been forced to display the number of callers per minute on screen and it's been very low pretty consistently. In the past they would have around 50-150 (you could view it online) but now it's not unusual to see it below 10 for long periods so I think all the negative press means they'll be lucky to be profitable at all at the moment.

TV3 have allegedly received 1 million Euro from the proceeds up to the end of last year.

I doubt it profitable at all at this stage since the BAI have upheld complaints and with the new bill to control quizzes like this, I think play TVs days are numbered.
