My Sky Experience (and Sky + Question)

So what a week I've had with Sky and it's still not over.

I rang Sky bout 3 weeks to get it installed into my new apartment. Rang them quoting "Introducting A Friend" and they promptly told me "Sorry you don't have Sky installed in your apartment". But I do and after a short argument I said as ye cant help me I will go to a retail store in town.

So last Wednesday I got a Sky+ HD box installed (through the retail store) just in time for the Liverpool match that night, well so I thought anyways. Installer left at 6.30pm saying it should be activated by Sky within the next hour or so. Waited and waited, and at 8.30pm I rang Sky myself to see what the story was. "Oh we'll send the signal again"......11pm still nothing so i turned the box off and on.....when I turned it back on, it said "you don't have a signal"!! So i left it till the morning to see if it was back and nope still no signal. Rang again and because I have only one connection into the sky box, when I changed the wire from input signal 1 to input signal 2, bang I had sky. But I had another problem. No Irish channels....I had RTE 1 as 101 but it said "This program is not available". So the sky person said I will "send the signal again". Came back that evening, same thing. So I rang again and we did some jiggery pokery with the box but nuthing. So Sky tells me as I had a independent installer, I should contact them. So I did and he tells me (and I believe him) that he could do feck all for me....Sky must reset the "Regional Settings" on the card. So I ring sky again on Friday evening (this is after about €20 of credit gone on my phone). Oh I'll send an email she says to our technical people and they'll ring you back. So here I am Monday and still no phone call and still no Irish channels.

In the meantime as I was waiting for my signals on the Wednesday I rang to redo the "Introduce a Friend". "Sorry we can't do that as you went through a retail store". Ah hello, I couldnt go through ye as ye told me Sky wasnt installed in my apartment block. 20 minutes fighting on the phone with an unhelpful Andrew I eventually spoke to his manager and she says she will offer me something in a months time when my current offer of one month free runs out. I'll believe it when I hear her on the other end of the line!

So after all that I have questions about how the Sky + HD box works :D

I strangely can record something on one channel while recording another even though I have only one input cable??? How's that? When I am watching one channel and I put on the channel I am recording it says "No signal is being received". But when the recording is over, I can still go to planner and watch the whole programme??? I cant understand it.
I was recording two shows on Sky1 last night and it recorded the first one fine but it missed the first 10 minutes of the second one.....why so??

Are you sure the second one is recording?
It may say so but when you go to view, it'll give you the "No Satellite Signal" banner.
The missing ten minutes may have been an overlap..

Yeah I was watching sky sports at 8.15pm while sky1 was recording.....when I went to view the channel while recording it said "No Satellite Signal"....but when it was over I could watch it on my Planner.

So its now 10 days since I got sky installed and still no irish channels. I have spent about €30 on calls to them and they've been sending signals every day and still nothing doing. Tomorrow will be my last phonecall to them me thinks....i'll be asking them to take the box away with em.

I have only one connection to the HD box and when I put the cable into input signal 1, its says "No signal" but when I put it into input signal 2...its fine with the exception of the irish channels.....weird me thinks!!!

More then likely you will have to get a second cable ran to the HD box. If you still get the "no satellite signal being recieved" the dish might be out of alignment and needs a little tweak. Put pressure on them and say that you are unhappy with what has happened from the start and threaten to cancel if it has not been sorted. You are within your 30 day cool off period which means you can cancel within the first 30 days.

As your in an apartment you may can you clarify if it's a shared dish or one on you balcony or somewhere similar ?

The Irish channel are on a narrow beam and the smallest mis-alignment can lead to no signal. What is the signal strength for RTE like, this can be got through the one of the options in the service menu. If you got bad signal strength I'd say who ever installed the dish made a mess of it. I'd contact them and get them to re-align your dish.

Also by rights if you using a sky plus box or HD plus box there should a second line running to your box, the dish should have a multi LNB to allow for a second cable.

" I strangely can record something on one channel while recording another even though I have only one input cable??? How's that? " .....First I've heard of this but it could be your tuned into lets say channels 4 and you recording on more4 , as both of these are on different transponder signals so it's not a problem , but if you try to record film4 while watch channel 4 you'll get the channel not available error as they are on the same transponder signal . Maybe the 2nd cable is needed for watching and recording on the same transponder.

    See " http://en.kingofsat.net/pos-28.2E.php " for more signal/transponder info

Make sure the box is in single feed mode, it won't work properly unless it is.
Firstly make sure the cable from the dish is in input 1 then go to
    Services,
    Settings,
    01 select
    Set up
    single feed mode
    Yes

The box will reboot and once its back up and running ring sky to re-send the signal.
    Hope this helps

I was just looking into this.......this means that I wont be able to record channels outside the same transponder (or whatever)...doesnt it? I want to be able to still do this.....

Its probably just some sort of fluke that you were able to record one and watch another, its a wonder the box even functioned at all with no satellite signal going into input one. I'd say the reason why your Irish stations never worked was that every time time sky sent a signal to your card the box did'nt accept it as there was no signal coming into input 1.
Do what I said in the last post anyway so you can get the signal for your Irish channels and if you really want to, just reverse it when the signal comes through and plug back into input 2. If if works for you now theres no reason why it won't work again.

O and by the way whoever installed it should've done all this anyway, sounds like a poor job and bad after sales service to me

Nah even with one connection you can record one channel and watch another on the same transponder signal...i.e. I can watch Sky Sports while recording Sky 1.
I had everything sorted for the one input signal and sky resent signals yesterday and still nothing. It must be a faulty card or something so they are sending me another
