    Hi All,

My OH sponsors an orphan elephant at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
    http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/ in Nairobi.

We received a request from them over the weekend asking us to sign a petition to try to influence a decision on the sale of Ivory stockpiles.

I've pasted the relevant part of the email here: -

    > Please find the January monthly update about the Orphans Project, but before we go into more detail about the orphans, lets consider their wild kin, and the future for elephants. Decisions made this year will impact on all of East Africa's elephants, including the orphans. Please consider taking the time to sign our petition as the future survival of the elephants of Central and Eastern Africa will be determined by Cites in March 2010 at the conference of the parties in Doha. We ask that everyone play their part in fighting for the elephants, and hopefully make a difference.

Please also be aware that you must click 'send' on two different screens. The first time is immediately after you've filled in the name and address fields. THEN there is a confirmation page (along with some 'email alerts' which you can choose to receive or not.) You must also click on the 'send' button at the bottom of the confirmation page to actually have your signature added to the petition. We would also recommend that after you have signed you log back onto the petition site and double check to see that your name (and message, if you have added one) is captured.

    > And for those of you who are willing to go the extra mile, you can also call the US House Subcommittee on Insular Affairs to request that the US Government get involved in requesting CITES oppose the sale of ivory. That number is: (202) 225-0691.
