The De Niro/Pacino thread started me thinking about people and their opinions when it came to actors

I very rarely meet anyone, male or female who dislikes George Clooney

I disliked him myself up to a certain point in his career but i just cant help but like the guy nowadays

he has been attached to some very good films, even the more under the radar ones like Perfect Storm etc...which i really enjoyed anyway, maybe ye all think it was ****e!

    so heres my question

    Is Georgie

    A. A great actor who has mastered his craft and can pretty much make a film just by being in it

    B. A one trick pony who just plays himself over and over again

Edit: apologies if this kind of thing is not allowed round here, not really in this forum a whole lot and havent noticed one before!

He's alright I suppose, a bit hit and miss really.

I think it's just the fact that he has this ''star'' status now, so his acting talent somewhat takes a back seat.

At least he takes a few risks I suppose, which is more than can be said for some.

Loved him in O Brother Where Art Thou.
I certainly wouldn't be rushing out to see any of his films right away, if anything I probably am more likely to avoid his films because of his ''star'' status.

I voted for the more positive of the two options, it's just two extremes :pac:
I wouldn't go so far as to say 'great actor' but I think he is far more capable than a one trick pony.. He doesn't appear to have great physical range (at least he doesn't take roles that require physical changes) but does have good acting chops imo

Funny just checked him on imdb ... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000123/

Very few quality roles I have to say. The name is more famous than the acting maybe ? I thought he was in a lot more movies than that.

He was a great Bruce Wayne though.

I guess he chooses his roles more carefully than others do.

I dont think he is either option. He is more hit and miss, with more misses than hits in terms of his quality of performance.

He is a victim of his pretty boy image i reckon.

He's not the most amazing actor, but honestly I like the guy. He rarely hams it up, and when he's good, he's extremely good.

I also rate him as a director as well.

I have to say i like him, he has seemed to have a good film in the main genres and although somewhat ruined by its sequels oceans 11 is still the "coolest" film i've seen.

Thought he was good in Syriana, Good Night and Good Luck and O Brother Where Art Thou. Possibly Michael Clayton as well.

Everything else he's done is meh imo

he is a great actor and director - i thought he was very underrated as an actor on ER

Clooney is one of those actors that I have a love hate relationship with. At his most loveable, he's playing to type as the 'charming Cary Grant-esque rogue' (out of Sight, Up in the Air), at his most irritating, he's usually making one of his vanity projects for the Democratic Party that will involve George at his most unbearably smug, grinning like a self righteous Cheshire cat while he proceeds to hector an audience to bored tears (Syriana, Michael Clayton).

I think he's an actor with three basic modes: Cool (ocean's 11, three kings, out of sight), Serious ( Syriana, Solaris, Michael Clayton), and Quirky (The Men Who Stare At Goats, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Burn After Reading).

He seems to be a very good judge of the suitability roles for him. Which is a great skill to have, and has benefitted his career immensely. He plays to his strengths, and that's no reason to criticise him.

Also, like Karl Hungus, I'd say he's a very competent director too. I hope he directs more films soon.

clooney is not by and stretch a great actor , he is however a very cool man and the most charming mofo on the planet

He's a good actor, but not a brilliant one.

He makes up for that by being very, very, very, sexy.:)

Not sure if it's the acting or the movies he chooses but the only film I enjoyed with him in it was Perfect Storm.

Most of the ones I've seen of his are all quite topical, Up In The Air for example.
