Work in September

I was wondering when schools usually make decisions regarding staff requirements for the next academic year. I am doing the Dip (secondary) teaching practice in a school and if there was the possibility of some work there next year I just wanted to now when I could expect the principal to broach the matter. I'm not being presumptuous but there's a big staff and there could be a possibility of some kind of movement or at least as muhc possibility as many other schools in the current environment.

Obviously I'd be getting to the stage of considering applying for jobs for next year in the coming months (all going well with the Dip of course!) so I am curious about reading the signs in my current school as I quite like the bit of familiarity I have with it at this stage. Would such a matter be a last minute thing in May/June or would there be some indication earlier than that?

If you enjoy the school you are in now, there is no harm whatsoever in arranging a meeting with the principal and explaining that you have really been enjoying your teaching practise in the school, and ask him/her if they would consider you for any positions that may arise next September. The sooner you do this the better. I wouldn't build up your hopes but the fact that you have your foot in the school may work in your favour.

Usually, a Principal will have an idea of what he/she needs for the following year in May/June.

It'd be a bit early at the moment to expect to find out what's what for next year.

What tends to happen is that ads come up in the papers in early June, for a week or two, and then NOTHING until the last week or two in August.

I'd deffo say, though, that you should speak to your Principal asap about next year. No real need as yet to hand in a cv, just call in and say that you really like the school, and let him/her know what you'd bring in terms of extra curricular stuff. Then speak to him/her casually every few weeks anout it. Not to annoy, just to stay on the radar.

And best of luck! The waiting isn't nice, been there, but it'll all work out! :O)
