the name says it all. i am going to the states in the summer and i would really love to get an iphone but i am still a little confused about how i should go about it. at&t are the only suppliers and they only sell them with contracts so how do i get around this? i am pretty sure i understand the whole jailbreaking and unlocking that i have to do once i am home but where should i buy the iphone in the first place?
also does anywhere still sell iphones with 3.1.2 or is there a way of downgrading from 3.1.3?

id say if you wait till summer those models will be unjailbreakable, the latest batch you can only do a tethered jb, so apple are getting on top of it, and chances are by then you wont be able source an original iphone with 3.1.2 on it

    1. first of all the summer is a long way away in terms of iphone.

    2. 3.1.3 may be jailbroken and unlocked by then

    3. iPhone 4th gen will probably be announced if not selling by mid-June.

you're jumping the gun a little i think.

AT&T sell non-contract phones but they are still locked to AT&T so that may be your best bet.

o2 had the 3G S less than a week after the US launch as far as i can remember. not 100% sure though as i was state side at the time.

they don't seem to put it on their site as it's really rare that people buy phones in america without a contract and they want as many people tied to AT&T for the contract length as possible. walk into an AT&T store and hassle them about it.

ya they got a handfull of handsets, most people myself included had to wait for months after they came out, before we actually got one ! that was my point
op you wont be able buy one in an at&t store with out a social security card ive read here somewhere ?

i guess that is what i will have to do.

besides america, what is the cheapest way of getting a jailbroken and unlocked iphone?

there's feck all of a difference between here and there tbh, people are obsessed about the notion of getting cheap unlocked iphones from america or wherever, they dont really exist, your much better off getting a subsidised one from o2 or vf here, yes they have you by the nuts for 18 months, but you have a "cheap" iphone, got mine for 199 for 45 a month, i'd consider that cheap,
your opening a whole can of worms if you buy a foreign phone now, and if you ever need to restore, to 3.1.2 you wont be able to, and you'll be locked out, (possibly forever) until some new jb technique may come available
    just my 2C

i know what you mean. this is honestly starting to sound like the best option.

I should have just posted a link to this but I forgot.

I don't really get how a 18month contract at 45 a month is cheap? Maybe it is just after the launch of a new iPhone but certainly not in the summer time or even now. Tbh anyone buying an iPhone on contract now is pretty stupid in my books.
