Travel Laptop?

I'm heading to Canada for a year in August and am looking to buy a good portable laptop to bring with me while I travel.

I was looking a something for something like this although this particular one is a bit on the expensive side.

My question I suppose is 'Should I get one before I go or get one when I get over there?'

Would there be any issues surrounding voltage and such? Or is it a simple case of getting an adaptor or new power cable?

Have a look here for an indication of Acer prices in Canada
    http://www.canadacomputers.com/acer/

If it was me I'd buy when in Canada, most chargers automatically work on
both 220 or 110 - just check the ratings on the power pack. All you should need when bringing it back to Ireland is a US/Canadian to Irish/UK socket adapter.

As you'll be using it in Canada for the first year it'd make more sense to have a local (Canadian) warranty and support as well.

I have an acer, Aspire one, and it's great, but I'd wait until I'm over there, you'd kick yourself paying the prices over here.

    Have fun in Canada!

I bought the toshiba equivalent of the one you have linked to above, its decent (as an indication, it runs AutoCad, so long as you aren't doing any 3d)but there is newer hardware out now that you should be able to get soon for the same price.

Get it over there - i bought mine in america in january, worked out about 300 hundred euros, will be the same in canada, you will get it even cheaper if you shop around.

And voltage was no problem on mine, there was a standard connection into the transformer, and the transformer was rated 100v to 240v so would work on both sides of the atlantic

Cool, I think thats made up my mind then. Thanks for all the info ;)

I think the logical thing is to get one over there alright but it would have been nice to have one for the trip over to help pass the time.
