Is comfort an issue? Do you have kids or dogs that you need to bring? How far is your commute to work?

If you're not pushed about cars in general and just want an A-to-B car, then I would say to cut your budget by 50% and spend the balance on something that interests you more.

There are so many cars in that price range! Are there any cars you like the look of that would help the search? What bodytype do you prefer - saloon / hatchback / estate?

You're not doing huge mileage really, so the running costs between a petrol and diesel will probably be quite minimal. The Honda Accord is a nice car, and pretty solid. The Ford Mondeo is supposed to be a good car to drive as well.

You might well get a decent car for less money though - check out http://www.adverts.ie/showcat.php?cat=2

if it was me then it has to be a diesel merc auto with low miles, this car is only run in,, good value and would last a guy 8 years plus, and still be worth 2000 in 8 years!

Nice enough car, but at the top of the budget at best, plus relatively high road tax if you're not really pushed about cars.

Whats your opinion of honda civic?

Probably about as reliable as they come (despite the current recall problems in the news)

    Something like this?

Don't know what the 1.4 is like though

a new c class diesel auto will cost 50k.. so they are good value even a 2002 model,,i'd say 8400 would buy it, and probably get u a warranty ,road tax not that high, their a 2.1,,and they still feel like new to drive, so will feel like a 50k car,
i know a good choice would be a golf tdi.. and you will pass one on the road every 20 sec's, i perfer something a bit rarer, although merc is not rare, but it been a auto diesel in the price range will low miles is rare, with air con,,and taxed, 8000 might by it, not sure if it has nct, i'd demand one if buying

a small petrol would cost more to run, with petrol been more expensive to buy,and the fact a petrol will not do 55 mpg,,, which this merc would do on a commute at 60 miles per hour,,
and its easy service,, no timing belts,, just change de oil every 7000 miles,,and filters,
    cheap to run,
i'd demand new tyre's if it needed it to lol

i think any petrol car will small engine will cost you 18 plus euro more per week to run,,,
so theirs your tax and insurance money,,,,for the extra size cc engine
