Sunflower seeds in wire mesh feeders?

I put sunflower seeds (black seeds and hearts) in wire mesh feeders, do others do this? Or do you use port feeders? I am just wondering as the sunflower seeds in the mesh feeders go down very quickly. The birds (particularly starlings) seem to spill more than they eat and make a mess on the ground below. Although ground feeding birds generally hoover it up :)

Wire mesh feeders are too wasteful for any seeds. Either get a proper seed feeder or just scatter some seeds on the bird table and the ground.
