Passport Query..

Is it possible to renew my passport earlier than the expiry date? I presume it is? My passport is not going to expire for another 18 months but i am leaving Ireland in 6 weeks and i am hoping i don't return for a few years!! I don't want to be caught in Australia with an expired passport.

If i did renew passport how would this affect my Visa/flights? I have my Australia visa and flights booked under my current passport details.

    Cheers.

I think they will only re-issue passports 12 months and under if i remember correctly. I enquired about the same thing a number of years ago. I then claimed that i lost my passport and was told that i could only get a 2 year one. So that wasn't going to work either. I didn't need the extension in the end. Anyways if you will be based in Australia just go to an Irish embassy and renew it while there.

You can't renew unless it's going to expire in less than a year.

Don't worry about renewing your passport abroad, it's easy to do if there's an Irish embassy in your country, although it does take about 3 weeks.

Crap, I need to do this too. Mine isn't up til 2013 but I only have one page left and I'll be in Kosovo for the year, no Embassy there. Was planning a trip to India and that's a whole page of a visa. So then it'll be full. Surely there's some way around this? I can't just be stuck with a full passport for 3 years!

What about is the passport is all tatty, and the writing/harp on the front is all faded. Mine is out mid 2012, and I want to do about a year of travelling before that. I was hoping it would be fine, but friends who have been travelling reckon mine is too faded and that I'll have loads of problems with it...

Mine is totally faded. It gets a few second looks alright from people but I've never had problems. Apparently only the US would have a problem. You can get Irish covers for them anyway.

It's definitely not true that you can only renew if it's up within 12 months. Maybe that used to be the case but not anymore. Mine wasn't due to expire til mid-2012 but I renewed it last month cos i'm going travelling for at least a year and a half. My boyfriend did the same and we both got our new passports with no problems

If it's absolutely necessary that you get a new passport the easiest thing would probably be to report it stolen and they will get you a new one, however that may not work for the expiration date but definitely for the pages!

Cheers - i couldn't see why they would not allow you renew your passport early. I couldn't be arsed with the hassle of renewing my passport abroad. I'd much rather sort it here and be done with it.

When your passport is full it's considered expired so you will have to get a new one.

Oh great, my issue is that there are only two pages left. I hope that will qualify as full because I'll need a lot more than two pages for what I have planned.
