    Hi,

I haven't seen this posted here before so I've decided to share it with you...

Years ago, www.pigsback.com had an offer where you earned piggypoints by signing uo for a motorcheck.ie fuel card. I did at that time for the points but hadn't a car!!

Anyway you get a replacement card every six months and a PIN (although I have never been asked for this, only a signature).

The way it works is that you can buy fuel at any Topaz at a set price per litre and it comes out of your acccount by direct debit monthly. Im signed up for e-statements so i get one a month but if you opt for paper their issue weekly with one monthly direct debit. There's no charge (unless you pay bank fees)

Please note the fuel card/discounted price will only show on your statement , not the receipt you sign.

I have used it for years now and only once did it cost me slighty more than what i would pay at the pump (i means cents).

For example my most recent purchase of "€40 petrol" cost me €38.68. You can see how this adds up and it's a deal you'll rarely get elsewhere.

Prices are updated every Friday at midnight, they used to text me every Friday to let me know if it would be cheaper to fill up on the Friday or the Saturday but you can check the current price at www.topazcard.ie as you can register your card and set up an online account when you get the card.

You can also request additional cards on the same account ( again when you set up an online account) with the drivers name as well as yours (for example your girlfriend/wife) and their registration(doesnt matter if its the same car . This will all link to your account and one invoice/direct debit. It's really great

If you interested sign up for it at www.motorcheck.ie and not www.topazcard.ie (as their charging €25 to open an account now). Trust me it's the same card and any further business you should do threw www.topazcard.ie - sounds weird just trust me!!

It can take a month initially and they always send vouchers when they issue a new or replacement card, for example - free tea/coffee when you buy petrol, free topaz water with a sandwich and a top wash for €5. They usually send 3/4 of each!

ALSO from 1st March, if you buy 500 litres on your account in a 3 month period (35 litres approx per week) you will be issued a €20 topaz gift card automatically by post!!!!!!!!!! This may nt benefit everyone but come on, where would ya get it!

i hope you like this BARGAIN alert:D

Thanks for the tip. Whats the latest price for a litre of petrol and diesel?

I have one of these for over a year now and have never used it once as normally the price of the petrol for the week is dearer than going to another garage down the road. Plus even when it was cheaper it was by less than a cent.

Maybe just garages by me other than Topaz are better value as a rule, but didn't find any use for the card at all

    no problem CFC007,

HERES THE PRICES FROM THE SITE TODAY

"Your Diesel price today is 113.67 cpl inc vat (93.94 excl vat)
Your Unleaded price today is 121.29 cpl inc vat (100.24 excl vat)"

Unleaded is currently 125.99 at my local Topaz and 124.99 at my local Tesco

I got one of these cards late last year after searching through boards enquiring about fuel cards. However, like the previous poster I have never used this card even once!! Whenever I receive the text stating the fuel prices it may sometimes be cheaper than the standard Topaz garage price but I have always found a cheaper price in another garage.

Just thought I would let people know how it has gone for me so far. Who knows in the future though I may get to use it.

I had a card for a long time, but was getting better value elsewhere so was using it less and less. Next time i went to use it, the account was closed by them and they never even told me. Thought that was a bit ****

Yeah forgot to say that as well, I stopped getting the text messages with the fuel prices just before Christmas, and have just checked now and it seems I don't have an account any more. Thank God I didn't try to use it :) but you would think they would let you know they are closing the account.
Am sure it is of benefit to some people but I have always found prices cheaper locally, than their discounted prices and in fact in some Topaz garages the price at the pumps was cheaper than the price on the card !!

    Everybody has valid points...

In the area of Dublin i live in it's working out for me, granted i used to use Tesco a lot too but their prices aren't as competititive any more. I factor in the fact i'd be getting 3c back per €2 in vouchers (using clubcard credit card) and still using my Topaz Fuelcard generally is alot better

I have to say "its let me out" on a few occassions when i've being strapped for cash!!

I wouldn't like to lose it!

Prices for this card were much better a couple of years ago. Sincve then though i have not used mine. Always find that its cheaper elsewhere. Topaz has become very expensive, even with the card.

    Price is here:

    https://www.motorcard.ie/fuelcard/motorcheck/fuelcard_price.php

@121.21c for unleaded it's cheaper than the 124.9 I paid in tesco Clare Hall today.

I had that card through pigsback aswell ages ago but I stopped using it as the Tesco was always way cheaper. I guess tesco have become less competitive so will have to reactive my Topaz card!

Compare the fuelcard prices to the garages near you here. And ignore what they say their average i for the months. They dont calculate it properly. Notice they still show the average fir last April

Dont have one often tempted to sign up a few times thru groupscheme in work
But worth noting that you pay theh cheaper price ie if cheaper at the Topaz pump than card price then you pay the pump price.

    hi micks,

just to confirm for everyone that this is no longer correct, at least for the card referred to in the opening post

    Its entirely the opposite however...
Note: From January 23rd. If the card price is higher than the pump price, you will be charged the card price by default.

    EDIT: too slooooowwww

Had this card for 5 years. Sometimes competitve, but 75% of the time it's not (at least where I live). A direct debit of €40 failed recently (wasn't keeping an eye on the current a/c) and they slapped me with a €30 penalty. More than wiped out any benefit I ever got from the card. That finished me with Topaz for good.

I stopped using my card when they changed the rules so that if the pump price was cheaper than their price you'd get the cheapest price.

You can see why they changed the rules though. Because more often than not now the card price is higher than the pump price.

Am with DCI myself. Gave up on Topaz years ago. Current DCI price for diesel is €1.11

Can you get a personal/private use DCI card or does it have to be registered to a business?

Sorry, Kaiser in coming back to you. I haveit in my business name, but afaik there is (was) no problem joining up as an individual. You can join online at www.dci.ie and as far as I remember there is a part where you fill in your monthly mileage. Make sure you hike it well up. They have a list of core site which are about 4-5 cent cheaper than the local pumps and another list that is 2 cents cheaper. A dowside is that they introduced 2-weekly debits from your bank account, rather than monthly.

Hi Kristopherus. I wonder could you let us know what is the best possible price they have on diesel right now?

If its 4/5c off the average, I don't see much benefit in my case. If its 4/5c off the lowest price available within a 20 mile radius, then it would be.
I always make a habit of keeping an eye on prices and tanking up at wherever is cheapest that particular week. For example, over the past week, 1.11 has been the best I can get round the areas i'm driving.

Sorry to dig up a pretty old thread, just wanted to share my experience of the Topaz Fuel Card. I got one around 6 months ago. I used the card fairly regularly and the bill was normally around €70-80 p/mth. Anyway, I had been paying by Direct Debit and on one occasion my DD failed to go through due to the fact that my funds were low due to another payment being slow to process. I called Topaz and had the DD re-processed a few days later with no problems. I was then told I would get a call back in the next week to let me know when my card was re-activated. No phonecall. I called back and they said I would have to wait til the next monthly DD was processed before my account would be reviewed. Again, I didn't hear anything back so I called Card Services only to be told that my account could not be re-activated unless I paid a deposit on the account of between €400 and €500.

I was pretty annoyed that this was the case so I cancelled my card instead. Then, today I received another charge of €30 on my account, an admin fee for the returned payment. To be honest, I found the overall service pretty shocking. It seemed as if they weren't interested in maintaining small individual customers. I'll be keeping away from Topaz as much as possible from now on anyway. I was actually going to order my fill of home-heating oil through the fuel card but found a cheaper deal elsewhere anyway.

Signed up in April and couldn't be happier. Its convient and very easy to keep track of just how much petrol I use per month. Its cheaper and allows my money sit in my savings account earning interest for that little bit longer.
