I got the shed in our garden converted last year I will be using it for storage and as a basic working area. Because it is not connected to the house its mighty chilly so going to invest in a portable heater. Wondering which portable appliances are the best for just a small area, adjustable heat, economical and give a good blast warmth! Fan, oil fired portable rads, gas portable, electric convector?? also what brand is good Super ser, De Longhi, Dimplex Glen come to mind.

If you have electricity in the shed, a small fan heater is what I use in my wooden shed. It will take severe chill off the air in about 10 minutes.

Depends a bit on what you're doing in there :) I use mine as a woodturning workshop, so the very last thing I want is a fanheater blowing wood dust about the place, plus any kind of naked flame or heating element is a no-no as well, so I've got a small oil filled convection radiator, a De Longhi I think. It works fine to just keep the edge off the temperature in there .. it won't heat it up quickly from cold, but if I know I'm going to be working out there I'll put it on for 30mins or so beforehand.

I would suggest some sort of radiant heat, rather than convection heat, i.e., the kind of heater you get outside pubs and restaurants. The reason is that the radiant heat is not blown away, and you will get more instant heat.

Be aware of the following issue:

If you heat the air in the shed it will absorb more moisture, particularly from your breath, sweat etc.

Then when you leave the air cools down and the moisture has to condense out which it will do on the colder objects in the shed such as tools etc. A nice place is the armature on motors.

If you like it warm then consider using a dehumidifier as well

It is a shed that I converted into two parts the first holds garden equipment and tools the second room will be for storing stock for my business the small stock will include some pressurised containers and sprays so that is why I am wary about what type of heater to use. Gas is out !! so will have to be oil or electric it is a small room so want a good circulation of heat not just heat blowing in one area like a fan heater.

A fan heater heats all the air in the shed, it does not just blow the heat into one place. Because of the fan, you get significant and rapid dispersion of the heat through circulation of the air. The one I have oscillates on it's stand so the stream of heated air is waved about, but really it will still heat evenly even when the oscillation is turned off.

I use one in my wooden shed for when it is cold and when I need to work in there - I am not just guessing.

They are very cheap too. €15 or less.

Do you have a 2 kw hair dryer? If so, let it run in your shed for 15 min and see if it heats it up or not .
