Speeding ticket question

So I managed to bag my first speeding ticket last night driving into Limerick from Galway. I was very flustered and embarrassed at the time so I didn't really resist much, but having thought about it now, I'm quite sure I wasn't doing 70kmh in a 50kmh zone, if I was speeding it was at max 60kmh or so.

Also, it was about 10pm and there was medium traffic. How accurate can those laser guns be (I didn't see if it was on a tripod or handheld) at night?

    very accurate.

You could try and fight your corner in court, but the excuse of not recieveing the ticket in the post doesn't wash anymore with a lot of judges.

Also, it's 4 points, a larger fine, and the expense of taking a day off work to attend court in limerick.

The ball is in your court

Personally.. I'd take the hit, and live and learn.
    2points won't affect your insurance

Yeah I think I will do that. €80 and 2 points sounds a lot better than €800 and 4 points.

And you say 2 points will not affect my insurance? Are you sure?

The best thing to do is ring your insurance company or check out their website FAQ section, there are multiple ways it can/cant affect you depending on your situation, eg how long you are driving etc.

generally insurance companies give discounts for 2 or less penalty points.. Best to check with your insurance company. But i'd be fairly confidant

Ok, thank you all for your replies. :)

One last question, how can I go about making sure that I pay within 28 days? Don't I have to wait for them to mail me the ticket first?

They are just as accurate in the day as in the night. No difference

Once your points are under 4 it will not effect your insurance. Rise over 4/6 and then they will add on 20%+

Your 28days (56 in total) only start from when the notice is processed and sent. When you recieve it on the top right hand side is the offical date. You can only pay when you recieve the notice.

I might as well use this thread instead of starting a new one.

I got zapped driving into Navan at 9am on Saturday morning. No real excuse, I wasn't paying attention and the speed limit went from 80->60, 60->50 in about twenty meters so was caught doing 80 in a 50. My bad.

I've two penalty points already. So I've a couple of questions.

    1. When I actually get the penalty points? I seem to remember not getting the post for a while the first time around, so is it based on when I get notification, or does it go on immediately?

    2. Do I have to ring my insurance company to notify them of this, or just when I go to renew? If I have to notify them, when? Now or when I receive the notification by post?

    3. Is it over 2 or 4 points that it starts affecting premiums? I'm only paying about €450 at the moment, so not too expensive anyway, but I'm wondering will it jump next time I go to renew.

    Cheers.

[edit] Dammit, after re-using an old thread, I've just realised that after searching for Car+insurance+penalty+points, I picked the one thread that isn't in the Motors section. I can delete this post and move it to the motors if that is best...

The points are applied when you pay the fixed penalty fine should you choose to accept it.

Pretty sure you have to notify them when you get them. Check the documentation they sent you when starting the policy

Anything over 4 and it begins affecting your premium I reckon.

Which road were you travelling on into Navan? Was it regular or Traffic Corp?

The Kentstown road. Just after the Renault garage. I was stopped behind someone turning right into the garage, so when he turned I put the foot down a bit to get back to the speed I was traveling before that. Went round the bend, and down the hill and then went through the two signs that are right after each other still at the 80 mark.

It was a motor bike Garda. He didn't seem in the mood for chat. I couldn't believe he was out at 9am on a Saturday morning. Just my luck.

Quick question, what if a garda wrote you a ticket but he wasnt wearing his numbers at the time?
    does the ticket still count
