Quick oil question

    I have a 2006 diesel engine and have always used part-syn oil, Bought oil today (5w-30) as usual but never looked at the bottle properly and its fully-syn.

    Is this an issue at all or will i change it for the part-syn. Thanks

    Go to http://www.castrol.com/ and put in your make and model but I would think that (without knowing your make and model) 5w-30 might not be suitable for your diesel engine.

    Its a ford. 5-30 ford dealers reccomend

    Edit: castrol website says the same 5w-30. so after using part-synthetic oil for 4 years would putting in the fully synthetic oil do any harm?

    If the website recommends it, use it.

    Focus petrols for example, are recommended to have 5w-30 and most garages use 10w-40 which causes the engine to burn some oil between services. GO with whats recommended.

    Also, there can be a big difference between "meets X manufacturer standard" and "approved by the manufacturer"

    The first is the oil company's opinion on its own product, the latter is an endorsement by the manufacturer that it has been proven (very expensive process) to meet their specs...

    ok cool thanks its defo 5w-30 i know that much is spot on . most but not all reccomend part-syn oil and thats whats in my engine at the moment.

    But seen as i purchased fully-synthetic oil by mistake will it do?:rolleyes:

    Whats the diffrence between the two anyway? fully synthetic is just a better grade of oil than part-syn i think is it? some people say once you start using fully synthetic you should stick to using it and not change back to part syn?

    It stays within its spec for longer, also propor fully synthetic oil contains a percentage of ester as a synthetic basestock rather than just an additive, these are expensive fluids that have been used in jet engines for years (over 50), these esters stick to metal surfaces and so the protective layer is there all the time.

    Problem with some fully synthetic oils is that they don't contain these esters :rolleyes: The cheapest synthetics are not actually synthetic from a chemical viewpoint, they are just refined mineral oils of light viscosity. These oils are better than mineral oils but can legally be called fully synthetic. If it's cheap it probably is these hydrocracked oils rather than an ester based oil you are getting.

    I also have heard once you go fully syn you should not go back but I don't know is there any reasoning in it, frequent oil changes of the correct grade oil and you won't go far wrong regardless of how much it costs :)

    Fully synthetic is usually better for turbo cars as it resists sludging and separation caused by high temps in the turbo. Also it usually contains solvents which actually help clean the engine. Like the lads said as long as its the correct viscosity, use away.
