I'm looking to organise a DIY Skiiing trip to Italy with for 4 people (intermediate skiers). I found cheap flights to Bergamo and reasonable car hire. Any ideas of good resorts within 2/3 hours drive? Also looking to rent an apartment for 4. Thanks.

Hey there, check out livigno, been skiing there a few times. Great resort about 4 hours drive from Bergamo. Good mix of slopes and social life. Prices are pretty good too. Check out the tourist office Livigno.it or Livignosnow for accommodation have used both and found them reliable. Livignosnow also do transfers from Bergamo and Malpensa.

Depending on how long you plan to ski, you might check out Foppolo. It's less than an hour from Bergamo, and most of the hotels there will come down and pick you up from the airport. Not huge, but not bad skiing, and not expensive.

Thanks for the replies Eileen and Zircona. Looking to go for 6 days so may consider Livigno. Foppolo looks interesting too.

    60k from Bergamo :

Foppolo linked to Carona by lift
Foppolo linked to San Simone by bus (or your hire car)
    1 pass covers all three

Foppolo not that quaint, Carona v nice town, San Simone great snow, but place dead after in evenings

    Lift passes cheaper thru hotel

If you have time pop into Decathalon Seriata (5k from airport), great for ski and outdoor gear

The bigger resorts are 2.5 to 4.5hrs from Bergamo

Was in Carona two weeks ago snow excellent

check out madesimo an hour north of lake como, maybe 2 hours from bergamo. I'm going in a few weeks based on snow reliability and needs of early and mid intermediates.

Would definitely recommend Livigno. Only back for my first skiing holiday there. Had a great time. Cheap as chips once you are there. Gourmet three course meal for two with a litre of wine for less than €50. Beer, cigs, etc are also as cheap. Its a tax free resort and its great. Good selection of blue and red runs too. The drive there is a bit longer than most places but its amazing. The mountain pass is a little scary but its an experience. Definitely recommend it to you. Livigno snow will prob be your best bet. They got me accommodation when everywhere I tried was booked out.

Almost did Passo del Tonale there last year. Has a glacier and insane amounts of snow (4M+ at the top). about 1.5-2 hours from Bergamo if I recall. Lots of blues and reds I think.

Livigno can be a bit of a long haul if you're driving (check if snowchains are needed and italian bank holidays!!)

We did Montecampione a few times...now that is CHEAP. Check activitybreaks.com. But its limited, more suited to a long weekend to find your legs.

Thanks for all the comments. Going next Thursday for 4 days so must book something asap. Now to decide between Montecampione, Foppolo, and Madesimo. The Activitybreaks deal to Montecampione looks like the best value.

check snow forecast for mnotecampione as it is lower doen than the others. also montecampione is a spread out intermediate ski area. with activity breeaks you stay in a town 20 mins away or so... cant remember the name. personally i prefer to ski out of and back to the resort. also you cant really apres ski then..

foppollo i dunno seems quiet limited and bit ugly to me. it is very close to bergamo which is good. it is not as high as madesimo... if you car about it reports say the nearby and linked i think, resort of carona is nicer / more quiant

I'm going to skiiing on monday for 4 days as you can guess from above i'm choosen madesimo. I'm flying lto milan linate so maybe the transfer is better than bergamo?
anyway madesismo seems to quiet high / good snow record but parts of the blues linking up the runs or close to resort ar emeant to be challenging for beginners
it gets busy at weekends so you might be too late for accommodation options. we ar staying middle of resort in very affordable b&b ginepro

if i was flying bergamo i'd probably go to ponte di legno linked to passo tonale or madonna di campiglio - was in madonna for 4 days around paddy's day a few years ago and its gort great skiing

If the links in Foppolo are open, it's worth doing, otherwise don't. You can always book there at the last minute as it's nearly all hotels that will pick you up even with short notice.

The resorts near Bergamo airport have all had alot fresh snow in last 24 hours and are all fully open even at lower levels. I would suggest the activitybreaks.com deal to Montecampione, unbelievable value and very close to Bergamo.

I would suggest Madonna di Campiglio. Great ski-area, superb landscape and environment. A bit pricy, though.

Hi, not sure if this thread is still but am interested in the same question. Obviously the earlier posts remain useful just wondering if there are any more recent or new discoveries? Ideally no more than 2-3 hours drive from Bergamo. Thanks

The whole skirama dolomiti is close, you're not stuck with buying the full area pass if the local areas are enough for you, I think the full pass is about 65€ more for the week or you can upgrade for the day for 25 or so.

Depends on hoe much skiing you want. Pinzoko is nice or andalo if you want villages, marilleva 1400 is ok if you want to remain in the hotel, its all doorstep skiing.

According to google maps bormio is only 3 hours, livigno I close by if you wanted to move around a bit.

Cervinia is just over two hours drive from Bergamo. Great spot for what you are looking for and plenty of accommodation in the centre of the village. I found the food excellent and drink reasonable for a ski resort and even a bit of Fun at night too.

Here at moment, two and a half hours drive from bergamo. Closer to turin. Pila is an hour from turin. Lots of resorts further up the aosta valley, courmayeur, la thuile, gressonay, monte rosa.

Cervinia has the best snow at the moment because it's high but winds have kept it closed for the last two days and most likely tomorrow. Bought a four day lift pass and they won't refund it. Driving to pila one hour each way. Pain in the hole. Skiing was very nice the one day it opened. Very gentle slopes stunning views.
