I purchased this TV just under 3 years ago. Which the warrenty has run out since.

Just last week i turn the TV on it just powered off itself. So i plugged it out for a few minutes when i powered it on i had the same thing, this time the standby red light just kept flashing.

I continued to keep plugging it in and out after about 10 trys i finally got it to stay on.

I contacted Philips they were going to send someone out to bring it back to the workshop to see what was up, the only problem was it would cost €100 just to tell me whats the problem and if i say go ahead and fix it it could cost me a fortune.

It would be cheaper to buy one which i am going to but,
    What brand do i buy?
How long of a life shoould one get from a 42" Plamsa?

I went onto a Website can't remember the name of it. People all over the world are having the same problems with the same TV. I have bought Philips make for everything for years but now i don't know what to do.

Is it true that one will only get 4-7 years from these TV?
Which is better LCD or LED?

I would recommend getting a Panasonic plasma. They generally give a better picture quality than LCDs. They are also usually a bit cheaper as it is very difficult and costly to make large faultless LCD panels.

Panasonic quotes a panel lifespan of 60,000 hours and claim that to be about the same as their LCD panels and twice that of old bulky CRT based TVs. So a plasma panel should be good for nearly 7 years of constant use, which would probably be well over 30 years of normal use.

I have learned to steer clear of Philips and Sony products.

LED is better than LCD. It is still really LCD, except the back light behind the LCD is provided by white LEDs.

Plasmas are generally not as energy efficient as LCD/LED so they use a bit more electricity, but these days it is only a light bulb or two worth of difference. The extra energy use is given off as heat, so doesn't go to waste except on those really hot evenings we get - all 5 of them we get per year.

This page might be worth a look:

Most brands domt manufacture plasma tvs anymnore, it is an obsolete technology.I have worked in the industry and can tell you fora fact that their only handful of tv manufacturers in the world and they are mainly based in korea and turkey. So the same tv could be branded a few different names.

Despite your misfortune Phillips are a very good brand. My personal preference would be LG or Samsung.

Also,Lcd or Led is a personal preference to be honest

So obsolete that the the main TV review sites still rate Plasma TVs as providing the best picture quality. I could say the same about LCD panels only being made in a very small number of factories. As far as I can ascertain, Panasonic's panels are made in Japan. They are so good that Pioneer has stopped making their own panels and now uses those made by Panasonic. My set was assembled in Czechoslovakia.

My previous Philips developed a burn mark in the middle of the screen and then the sound went away.

Philips isn't a very good brand by a long shot and plasma tv is far from obsolete.
For someone that works in the industry you sure don't know what the hell you're talking about.

ive got the same problem - phillips model - 42pf5331 - i think the main power board has gone and i can't get a replacement - Phillips are a good make usally - the only advice i can give you is to invest in a surge protector , as it was possibly a power surge that caused the problem in the 1st place . Any new tv you purchase will need to be surge protected - hope this is of some help.
