looks like installing the update KB977165 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977165) is causign SOME Xp systems to BSOD on restart. Only way to cure it is by uninstalling the offending patch:

    from the linked thread:
    1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console

Once you are in the Repair Screen..

    2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst

    3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt

    4. When complete, type this command: exit

there is a workaround (MS fix) available from before the patch was issued here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979682

No word yet on exactly why the patch is causing BSODs or what the catalyst is (I have this patch installed and I'm running fine on XP).

Unfortunately I got whacked by this BSOD yesterday morning. With no system disks (lost sometime since purchase 8 years ago). There was nothing I could do myself. It was indeed the KB977165 update. Had to leave it in to be fixed. All ok again now but sitting down in the corner is the 997165 waiting to reinstall... it can sit there. Microsoft had not yet explained the problem or issued a patch of the patch so watch when updating. Go custom install route and hold off on the 997165.

Did anyone else have this problem?

What are the chances of Microsoft refunding my repair bill?

Microsoft appear to be blaming it on malware according to here.
