I have noticed that when the engine is running in idle it sounds very rough however when i engage the clutch it seems to go away from a bit of researching it would appear to be the dual mass flywheel. Just wonderng if anyone has any experience of this and what was the outcome. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry to say it mate, but its bad new. That rattle is the DMF (dual mass flywheel). its made up of two seperate masses (one with the starter ring gear/pick up gear and the other is where the clutch drive & pressure plates bolt to.the idea is to quietin the "slap" of a diesel engine caused by the massive torque they create) "knocking" off each other and the reason the noise goes when the pedal is depressed is because its pushing the two together. That repair is gona cost you in the region of €1200. :(

I'm confused. Did you get your car repaired too? I thought the op was looking to get the work done...

Don't forget to replace it with metal flywheel kit. That way it should last a hell of a lot longer..

    Hi quarryman
Thanks for the tip on Walsh's sent them an email through there site on Monday they have not got back witt a price yet.
You are correct i am looking to get work done, and the op has been to Belfast. I am still wondering am i better off selling the car, its a 03 mondeo what is it worth??, not much i would imagine, or put money into it and drive it into the ground. Have to replace clutch, alternator belt, pollen filter, fix rear electric window, and handbrake is sticking. bonnet lock replaced. Will all these repairs add to the value of the car. I don't think it will ??
