I got me some skins from Runways last summer and used a fair bit esp after long cycles. I am often too lazy or have no time to strech so will use these. I also have a dodgy hip and find it helps a lot.

A good few use at this stage esp rugby players but also some cyclist Lance something. EUR 80 for full tights but for me money well spent.

I know some will argue they are as useful as nose breathing strips and metal wrist sea sickness bands etc so that's my 2 cents

I don't know if they are of any benefit to cyclists but they must have some medical benefit because they are recomended for airline travellers to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis and are also used in hospitals to prevent blood clots in patients after certain procedures.

FWIW I've researched this and there is no convincing scientific evidence these are effective.

I've also spoken to Grand Tour stage winners who feel they are of benefit.

Be aware that to be properly accepted they need proven effects in peer reviewed scientific/sports/medical journals

Also be aware sports are notoriously slow to publish new developments because they want to keep legal and novel treatments and training methods to themselves.

IMO they are nice in terms of how they feel bt alot of hassle and in the "snake oil" area at the moment.

I vaguely recall from school biology that blood is returned from the lower leg by normal action of the calf muscles around/below the knee area. If you're immobilised in a hospital bed or airline seat the blood pooling can be a problem, but for a normal active healthy person I can't see the same benefit.

How do advocates of compression leggings claim it helps?

I think you need to make time to stretch ! dont think skins are an alternative to stretching

I find them beneficial for running both during and after harder sessions. During running the compression of the tights helps reduce the impact of footstrike on your leg muscles - less wobble so fewer muscle tears.

AFAIK during recovery the compression helps quicken blood flow in the legs therefore speeding up muscle repair - I guess that's the logic although it would be cheaper to just jump into an ice bath for 5 minutes....

If something can let me believe that it is steching for me I'd much prefer to believe that then spend time actually streching:cool:.

To be honest this cycling forum has just gone downhill recently. There is not enough automatically jumping on the latest fad in spite of the lack of research on it allowing cyclists to blow cash on toys. And as for all this talk of duathlon I feel the mods have just let themselves down.

There's only one man who can fix this. Come back Mockler the cycling forum needs you.

Sorry Shaun but stretching is important.

Regular stretching improves force, speed and explosiveness.

Here's some evidence that backs that up as well...

Everyone knows that you can prove any argument with facts. I much prefer conjecture and white magic for arguments much more interesting

Ive said it before and Ill say it again

    Deja Vu?

also recovering from surgery and preventing DVT on planes are entirely different to recovering from exercise

Whatever about their supposed benefits post-exercise, I saw people wearing them (the knee-high sock type) on the W200 last year. Now that's just got to be wrong.
