Classic / Crap Movie Posters

Movie posters are designed to grab our attention and usually throw in a few bits & pieces to represent scenes / the tone of the movie. Many do the job, others excel and are the essential "hang-it-up-in-my-bedroom" type while the rest are just plain or godawful!

For as long as I could remember I always loved seeing this poster, even years before I actually seen the film or knew who that grissly, squinty-eyed man was. Dunno why, but the look of an angry Clint with 2 big fùck-off guns I always loved :pac::

I have this hung up in my bedroom :D

This one always made me laugh with Rutger Hauer's shìt-eating grin!

I've always loved Drew Struzan's posters, he's had some absolute classics through the years.

    http://www.drewstruzan.com/ ;)

Never knew he did Big Trouble In Little China poster, I've always preferred the hand drawn posters to the flashy photoshop designs. They just feel far more personal towards the film than random stills slapped together.

Robocop 2's poster was a big inspiration towards me drawing when my brother got this poster as the movie came out. He just looks the shìt here! :pac:

Aye, I've got a real thing for the hand drawn ones myself, as you say, they do indeed feel more personal. Big Trouble was a classic also.

I've got a framed original of this myself:

    Magnificent.

Horror movies always get the best ones IMO.

Oh, and something else that I really love since I discovered them. Polish movie posters for English language films are something utterly astounding. Probably not to everyone's tastes, but I find them quite fascinating, a completely different style to what we're used to entirely.

Some unreleased/concept posters are miles better than the actual cinema versions, look at these unused posters, some are great:

    Hellboy 2:

    The Mist:

This is just all kinds of awesome:

One of my favourite movie posters ever though I'm not sure where it was used...

    star_wars_episode_one_the_phantom_menace_ver1.jpg?w=450&h=613

Except I just noticed it says, "Episode 1" at the bottom... a little bit arogant...

On the other hand, this one always struck me as a bit silly..

    devoltaparaofuturo3_1990_poster.jpg

OK a natural progression from the posters for #1 and #2, but it seems to be taking the piss out of them a little...

Some of the Japanese art work to well known Western movies is cool too.

    l_6256ef02bfec4bbd906645b003a986a6.jpg

And this one from some Bollywood epic or another just kicks so much ass its unreal.

In cinemas worldwide? you couldnt move for seeing that in the year leading up to Episode 1's release

Its a teaser poster, I dont think it had even been named The Phantom Menace at that stage, it was still just Episode 1

    Awesome poster, terrible, terrible movie

I remember as a kid I had this poster on my wall and looking at the year 1997 it seemed to be soooo far off into the future.

A lot of films have took elements of it over the years too I feel.

    A real classic movie poster.

Reading through this thread it's good to see I'm not alone in thinking 99% of final mainstream posters today are ****e! Going to post a few more recent ones that I think have more thought put into them than "Trajan! Head shot! HDR!" and that haven't already been posted.

A couple of posts have been deleted because the images posted were way too big and had been stretching out people's browser windows. Just as a rule of thumb, can everyone try and keep pictures to a reasonable size from now on?

While I'm here I might as well mention the jurassic Park poster, simple but very effective:
    poster-jurassic-park1.jpg

As far as carp ones are concerned I really hate when action movie posters are just the star photoshopped over something exploding. Sure it tells you what you need to know, but it's getting very repetitive these days.
    Example:

I think that could be the greatest poster ever!

The Thing poster above always scared the sh*t out of me.

I love the Birds poster I saw ages ago, but I don't know if it was an actual proper poster or a mock up someone did. I like simple posters like this:
    the_50_best_movie_posters.jpg

And I love all the old James Bond posters, particularly:
    On%20Her%20Majestys%20Secret%20Service%20poster.jpg

I just love his pose on the skiis.

I can't stand all the Superhero Movie/Epic Movie etc posters. I suppose they're good in the way that they let you know the films are all related so that you should avaoid them.

Two of my favourite posters of all time:
    6034073

    and

    6034073

But I've always preferred teaser posters for the work that goes into them showing enough but not too much:

The actor on the poster awesomely stabbing those lions is a Pakistani actor named Sultan Rahi EDIT: Apparently, he has starred in hundreds of action movies and was shot dead in 1995 while changing a tire! Christ, the internet made the world smaller when a bloke from Co.Roscommon can find out info on an 80's Pakistani action hero. :D

The movie is apparently translated into Land Of The Lions or "Dharti Shera Di", though it's not listed on IMDB you can find it's listed here:http://www.citwf.com/film86867.htm

I think I actually saw one of his movies on the asian sky channels, middle-age mustachioed dude running around the place with an Uzi an unlimitied ammo cheats. His small gun fires sounding like an atomic explosion which resulted in sending his enemies 50ft into the air.................................man, that was an excellent movie actually!! (I realise there's plenty of middle-aged, moustach-branding, asian action heroes :pac:)

    Now you owe me!
Funny how the internet can make me seem like I'd actually know anything about Pakistani cinema XD

My girlfriend got me a Metropolis poster to frame - it looks incredible - along with Watchmen and Grindhous posters:

She also managed to track down and ship over a poster for Brazil for my Christmas present:

I also liked the original Dark Knight teaser posters, to be honest:
    tdk-international-teaser-poster-dark-knight-s.jpg
    dark-knight-jokerstreet1.jpg

I've always had a soft spot for the classic In The Heat of the Night Poster. It's just so sixties:
    in_the_heat_of_the_night.jpg

I'm fairly broadminded when it comes to posters I like. Just don't give me floating heads and I'm fine.

    How to Harry Brown

This one is neat, too neat, too balanced. Film posters for me work best when slightly offset in some respect.

    harry%20brown%20poster2.jpg

Two thirds of a very decent post ruined by the "bash street kids" in the left third. Clever use of a classic "Target" icon in Union flag red/white/blue which combines with the stars image indicates the thrust of the title characters actions and his broad location. It also hints at a previous Caine crime classic - Get Carter

    harry-brown-poster1.jpg

A hint made all the more explicit with this loud echo
