On the back of the positivity of sales in the motor industry for Janruary I thought it might be important to link to this.

They, not so long ago, closed their Opel dealership in Ennis, Co Clare.

Very large group comprising of Opel Dealership, Irish Car Rentals, Kia, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot, Chevrolet and Ssangyong with 2 dealerships in Limerick, car rentals desk in many locations.

Almost 100 jobs are under the microscope in Limerick following the appointment of an interim examiner to the ICR Motor Group

The Group which was established in 1982, is a leading car rental and dealership operation, headquartered in Limerick.

It is the parent company for Irish Car Rentals, Ennis Road Motors and Motorzone in Limerick and employs 157 people throughout the country and 40 staff on a seasonal basis, almost 100 of whom are in Limerick.

Michael McAteer, of Grant Thornton Accountants in Dublin has been appointed by the High Court as Examiner to allow the Group sufficient time to restructure its financing arrangements to put a long term arrangements to secure its future in place.

A statement from the company says that all the Group's operations will continue to trade as normal throughout the period of the Examinership.

Now that is a big surprise, the showroom they have there near Ivans is a very modern glass showroom type. Lots of cars in it when I passed there a couple of weeks ago though, but I would have thought a lot of those cars were new ones waiting to be delivered.

O/T but I presume that the Suzuki garage next to the Opel one in Caherdavin is completely unaffected?

The company was bought off ICR last week by Niall O'Dwyer the current general manager.

I dont know if this includes motorzone, i suspect not.

So Ennis Road Motors is ok again.

Well Motorzone on the dock road do not have popular brands anyway.

Fiat - Well that was never popular.

Kia - Kia just let go 20 people from the head office so that will probably show how quite they are.

Alfa - Niche market and you don't see many 2010 around as it is.

Very unlikely the GM bought Motorzone as well.

Ennis road motors is a good dealership. I wonder if he has taken the rental companies as well.

Berty, Not sure if Motorzone on the Dock rd. still deal in Fiat/Alfa. They are the main Honda dealership in Limerick and from the front its only Honda and Kia that are "up in lights".

I do think that ICR have been saved though. I heard someone mumbling something about an 8 million bailout for them. Can't elaborate any further than that though as that's all I heard of the conversation.

They do all the servicing in the clondrina facility for both garages, however im only aware of niall buying the Ennis Road Motors section (which includes the clondrinagh facility)

I'm sorry for the employees, but after an experience of buying a car there I went all the way to Cork to buy a SAAB two cars ago, and then an Alfa two years ago, (although they weren't doing Alfa's at the time).

Still, sorry to see any business in trouble.

Well they made a galliant effort at keeping it open.

Suits came in today and closed the place down.

Brother is making up his CV as we speak :(
