    'Lo,
Shane here from DCU Airsoft Society.
We're currently looking into organizing an Intervarsity competition between ourselves and some other Third Level Airsoft Societies.

Right now I'm looking for contact details. If you are on the Committee of - or know someone who is on the Committee of - an Airsoft Society, don't hesitate to send me a PM with some contact details for your Society and details about where you play etc.

The details of the competition are not worked out yet, as the planning is in very early stages as it stands. Just looking for how much interest there is amongst the college teams.

    Let me know lads!
    Shane.

I think DCU should get an alumnus team together, now that would be deadly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 527 ✭✭✭Lukekul

Hey Luke here(Prez of It Carlow Society)

Funny you should bring this up as I was hoping to get in contact with the other colleges around the start of March to sort out a weekday skirmish, so there would be plenty of people attending. As it's a bitch to get people to commit to weekend activities.

Feel free to give me a shout and we'll try and sort something for the end of march/early april.

    Cheers

I was talking to the lads in NCI ( im part of the team i dont represent) and they have a few colleges get in touch about the same thing.

But I think its typical college persona dealing with it, as in youll all sit there until someone doe sit for you, get up and get it going, before I finish college and get mad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 144 ✭✭coys

Oi Doc Down with that sort of thing!!! :D
I'm in charge now, not the other jokers!!

Shane Im definitely up for getting some inter-college shindig, just getting decent numbers is a bit difficult!

    Edit: yaay 100th post :D

    I don't want to be a pessimist but i don't think a league a feasible i.e. playing another college maybe once a month. I don't think many students could afford that, I know I couldn't :(
But if we did a large meet once every two months with a few colleges attending a different site each time. Points could be Given out depending on the days results and some sort of plastic lovely trophy handed to the winners at the end of the year.

I don't know how well three or four way fire fights would work...

No it wouldn't be done monthly, it would all be in one day. After all, there's only a handful of teams.

We want to just get all the colleges out in one arena for a Wednesday afternoon sometime and set up a tournament, properly marshalled, for a trophy.

The trophy can be paid for by a small entry fee from the players.

Anyway lads I need email addresses, so anyone here who mentioned their roots to a Committee, please PM me some contact details!

Btw, whoever above said college teams keep talking about this but not doing it, that's cus DCU haven't said anything about it before. This time it will get done ;)

    ITB Airsoft Society

    www.itbairsoft.com

    Email: itbairsoft@live.ie

Up for an inter-varsity game any time, max numbers I can arrange is 52.

I'm dying for this to happen and have already contacted a few society's, so let's get going.

I also got quotes for trophy's if anyone is interested. Not that pricey at all.

Also could you please forward on any contact details you receive? Thanks Shane.

It's actually not that expensive. Also, note how most college clubs (GAA, rugby etc) get full funding for bus's etc, it's because they're competing for some cup or league or whatever. It benefits the college for them to win something. However airsoft society's as yet, do not compete in any irish inter-varsity league. Airsoft is a sport though, and I believe if a league was set up, each society would receive significantly more funding, as usually the college sport's officer has an entirely different budget to the society's officer or Student Union.

I've already worked it out with our sports officer, and we've recieved 100% funding for any participation in an inter-varsity league, and I believe other society's could easily negotiate the same in their respective college.
Btw, whoever above said college teams keep talking about this but not doing it, that's cus DCU haven't said anything about it before. This time it will get done ;)

I'll hold ya to that ;)

Sweet, I have emails for ITB and Carlow now. Any other Societies who would like to be involved, make sure to let me know.

Details will be worked out very soon about how we would like to run this, and as soon as I know, I'll contact the Societies.

I'm interested in the prices of trophies, so what are we looking at?

Some sort of sponsor could be found, the "company name" Colleges Cup sounds good to me

I really want to see this happen now, keep the buzz up lads, if some one knows of a college society not already on here, let them know!

I was thinking maybe we should limit teams to something like 15 people?

I have made contact with a site who would host a weekday skirmish and have ideas for multi team skirmishes.

Almost all sites will host a weekday skirmish, so I doubt that'll be a problem at all.

15 for a team size I agree would work fine, however I do think that multi team skirmishes may not be a great idea. I'd much prefer a league. And sponsorship is deffo the way to go.

Also with regards to the DCU lads, make sure to keep everyone in the loop, don't feel you have to do everything yourselves. :)

Some more contact details that I have:

    NCI= nciwargames@hotmail.com

    DIT= ditairsoft@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks a lot for the contact details lads.

I'll definitely keep everyone updated with how things are coming along. I think teams of 10 might be a better option than teams of 15, and I think a league is the best way to do it, with every team playing every other team.

If you want to play a friendly to work out teething problems I'd be up for it.

With regards to numbers, it depends on the site I guess. For a big site, I'd say teams of 10 might be a bit small. Also the smallest bus available that I can find is an 18 seater, hence why I thought 15 would be good.

At this point tho I want an intervarsity game so bad I'll hav 1 vs 1 ;):p

Im afraid i would have to agree with Lukekul on this! I presume like myself most students couldnt afford to commit to a league? and that a multi team day would be much cheaper and great fun!
Also im a member of Carlow IT Airsoft Soc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,763 ✭✭✭Airsoft Reloded

Why don't you get a "college day" and see how you go from there, if all goes well you can maybe organise a league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭blacon

Whatever we do, it will all be in one day. So don't worry about expenses, we can easily run a league over one day.

I think 10 v 10 would work in pretty much any venue really.

Have you spoken to your sports officer? As I said previously it's completely plausable to get the day 100% funded by the college.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 527 ✭✭✭Lukekul

When the society was being set up they wouldn't accept it was a sport. And earlier this year I got a phone call from our socities officer saying he could help arrange buses but no funding was available for us.

It has been recognized as a sport by the ISC (Irish Sports Council) and they are the ones who decide what is and is not a sport.

    Exactly what he said.

Sorry to hear that anyway . It must be damned frustrating!

Perhaps if he/she was re-approached with such information then they would reconcider.

Think of at as a sales pitch to someone you want to buy your product. They don't want to give you their money, and you want the exact opposite.
I know when I started mentioning intervarsity games and a cup for the college to flaunt etc etc that my college got far more interested. Perhaps you just need to rub them up the right way, putting it in perspective how the college will benefit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭blacon

Right lads I've sent an email to those contacts I was given.

If any other colleges are interested, let me know asap.

Not quite true, it's been recognised by the FIS, which is the collective body for governing bodies for sports. This is step one to sports council recognition. The recognition does put Airsoft on a standing with other sports though.

I'm sure if your societies officer were pointed at the IAA site and contact info, they'd be able to sort it out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭KonFusion

    Any further details?

Any idea of the site that your going to use? It's important to know soon as funding requests need to be made, bus's need to be booked etc.

    Thanks!

I was in contact with red barn a few weeks ago who said they would be happy to host it but we'd need to set a date and approx number of people to get an idea of the price we're looking at. I don't know if anyone else agrees with this or not, or has their own plan.

Red Barn I quite like and is a great site so no arguments there. However from a cost perspective, HRTA is 2 euro an hour per person for college societies, which is pretty damn cheap! And it's a good site. I know cost will especially be a factor for those travelling long distance. Especially if they're hiring a private bus.

I think it's time we just answered a few questions:
I don't know everyone's Easter Holiday dates but ours down here are 26th March to the 12th of April, so

Hold the day before or after the holidays?
    Who is planning on attending?
    Where is it happening?
    How big are the teams?
Can we get a sponsored trophy?
Should we contact Take A.I.M. to maybe do a piece on us?
How do you want the games to go? - all out multi team games or a day long league with short two team games?

I don't want to come across as pushy but I think each colleges representative should answer these questions if they can. This will help with the planning process as well as keep everyone in the loop.

    My own answers:

Hold the day before or after the holidays?
    - ideally before, although it is very soon, afterwards the exams aren't too far away
    Who is planning on attending?
    -I.T. Carlow
    Where is it happening?
-A Dublin site, red barn in my opinion
    How big are the teams?
-10 is about right I think
Can we get a sponsored trophy?
    - we should try
Should we contact Take A.I.M. to maybe do a piece on us?
    -absolutely
How do you want the games to go? - all out multi team games or a day long league with short two team games?
-large all out wars for me

Hopefully if we all answer some of these questions we'll have answers for them all.

All same answers as Lukekul, just thought this could do with a Bump

Since the DCU lads are organising this, it probably makes more sense to contact them rather than just posting it here. As while it'd be good for each of us to know the opinions of the other societies, it'll make little difference if the event organisers are not aware.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 144 ✭✭coys

Hold the day before or after the holidays?
    - again preferably before as many of our members are going away
    Who is planning on attending?
    - NCI
    Where is it happening?
    -A Dublin site ideally
    How big are the teams?
-10 is about right I think
Can we get a sponsored trophy?
    - Every effort should be made
Should we contact Take A.I.M. to maybe do a piece on us?
    -absolutely
How do you want the games to go? - all out multi team games or a day long league with short two team games?
-large all out wars for me

    Just my 2 cents!

Its getting close to most peoples easter holidays, and if it is to be held before easter holidays people need to know as soon as possible.

I've been talking to the DCU lads via text, not email, and yes they have got back to me, just no date has been decided yet. Obviously I knew about it as you can see my posts above :P

You could have asked me this in person rather than posting it here
If you want to know anything else, ask me tomorrow.

DCU, ITB, NCI, CIT, DIT - I believe all of these colleges are involved.

    Hey lads,
Just a quick update from DCU.
    • We've set the date for the League as Friday 16th of April, two weeks from now.
    • We've been in touch with Carlow IT, ITB, NCI and DIT. If there are any other college societies that would like to take part, theres still time. Just let me know asap.
    • The location is provisionally Moyvalley Adventure Zone, but its yet to be confirmed.
    • The price will be €30 per player, i.e €300 per team.
    • The game modes will be decided by the marshalls.
    • Student cards will be checked by the marshalls.
    • If any team has sponsorship of any sort, please let me know.

    Any questions?
    Shane.

    It's a team of 10...

Max being 10 people on that team. If you wanted to play with less I guess they'd let you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭blacon

Once again I apologise for not seeing your questions sooner. I really gotta use Boards more!

By team of 10 we mean every game will allow a 10 man team, so if you bring more than 10, only 10 of them can play. If you bring less than 10, you will be outnumbered, because the other team will have 10.

Each team can bring one substitute if you want, so in theory you can bring 11 people who can play. One thing I must stress here though, and the teams have already been told but this is a reminder: Marshalls will be checking student cards. Every player MUST be a student in your college. If requested, the team captains can also look at the other colleges student cards too.

The trophy has been purchased. The venue has been booked. The colleges are ready.

Come Friday, the very first DCU Airsoft Intervarsity will begin!
