Can I use "middle" chainring as outer?

    Hey,

I want to get a 36 or 38T chainring to use for an IGH system. The BCD of the cranks is 104mm and I can find a few chainrings that will fit this. Thing is, they are marked as being middle chainrings. Is there any issue with using these as outer chainings?

    Thanks.

I'd say the biggest issue would be if the middle ring is dished to accomodate the thickness of the crank spider. In that case, it would be offset too far if you fitted it to the outside of the crank.

You would have to leave it in its expected orientation to allow the shift ramps to work correctly.

Somewhat related - a post I put up about converting an XT tripple MTB crankset to a double.
