Two changes for Derry duel in Parnell

    http://www.hill16.ie/viewstoryhill16.asp?id=12097&mainheading=Word+on+The+Hill&viewstory=yes

Dublin have made two changes to their starting 15 for their NFL Division 1 clash against Derry in Parnell Park this Saturday night (7.30).
Michael Savage (St Vincents) replaces Stephen Cluxton in goals while injury has ruled out Philip McMahon so Michael Fitzsimons will start at left full-back. The Cuala defender - who won a Dublin U21 football championship with the Dalkey club last December - will be making his NFL debut.

    DUBLIN (SF v Derry)
    1 Michael Savage (St Vincents)
    2 Paul Conlon (St Vincents)
    3 Rory O’Carroll (Kilmacud Crokes)
    4 Michael Fitzsimons (Cuala)
5 Paul Griffin (Capt) (Kilmacud Crokes)
    6 Cian O’Sullivan (Kilmacud Crokes)
    7 James McCarthy (Ballymun Kickhams)
    8 Eamon Fennell (OTooles)
9 Ross McConnell (St Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh)
    10 Alan Hubbard (Ballymun Kickhams)
11 Michael MacAuley (Ballyboden St Endas)
    12 Paul Flynn (Fingallians)
    13 David Henry (Raheny)
14 Blaine Kelly (St Marys, Saggart)
    15 Kevin McManamon (St Judes)

    Subs:
Stephen Cluxton (Parnells), Conor McCormack (St Marys, Saggart), Paul Casey (Lucan Sarsfields), Seán Murray (St Brigids), Darragh Nelson (Ballyboden St Endas), Denis Carrigan (St Marys, Saggart), Tiernan Diamond (St Vincents), Bernard Brogan (St Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh), Dean Kelly (Trinity Gaels), Kevin Bonner (St Brigids), Brendan McManamon (St Judes), Dean Rock (Ballymun Kickhams), James Brogan (St Oliver Plunketts/Eoghan Ruadh).

Personally, I'm happy enough with that and will be interested to see how Savage gets on given some of Cluxton's questionable distribution in Killarney last Sunday.

We need to build on the performance from the Kerry game as Derry looked might impressive against the REd hand last Saturday night with some great long range scores from play (they did exactly the same in last year's corresponding fixture).

Country before county. I'll be watching Ireland trash the French hopefully.

Would be a great win for the Dubs, if we win all our home games we will be very close to a league final:)

    Fairweather supporter ;)

Plenty of time to get to Parnell Park after the game (at least an hour). I'm travelling in from Lusk after the game so anyone closer than that has no excuse

McCauley is proving to be a great new player will be interesting to see him in an actual test against a tough derry team.

I would've thought Oscar nominated actress Aidan O'Mahoney would have been a test for him but McAuley played him very well.

He'll be well tested by Derry CHB Mark Lynch who scored 2 very impressive points against Tyrone last Saturday evening.

    :p

In fairness Aidan's form the last while has been fairly putrid, he's no-where near the form he had two years ago, so I wouldn't get too excited on McAuley just yet.

Is there any chance that Cluxton might lose the keeper jersey long-term or is just a case of giving the number 2 keeper a run-out in the league?

I'd imagine this could give a far better indicator than the Kerry game on where Dublin are at currently as Derry looked to be in good form the last night. Would imagine it should be a good game.

Cluxton had a slight limp as he left the pitch at half time last Sunday but he seemed fine in the second half.

Only time will tell but I'd like to see him in his Boden position alongside Fennell in midfield at some stage in the league. Does anybody know what age he is ? Cluxten will be the keeper for many years to come i reckon Gilroy is just giving him a well deserved rest.

His distribution last Sunday is enough reason to try another option.

Seeing as it was in Parnell Park last year, I thought it would be away this year. Unfortunately I can't go, or to the Hurling on Sunday, due to other commitments. I couldn't go to Killarney either. But I'll soon be back in the swing of things.:) I hope their impressive start last Sunday continues.

Not sure how much club football he has played with Brigids since he returned so say that was factored in.

As far as I know, he's injured at the moment. He was playing with the development squad back in October though.

how did Rory O'Carroll do the other day. Are there still questions about our full back line?

The FB line of Rory, Philly Mc and Paul Conlon were very impressive the other day and kept the Kerry FF line fairly quiet. Would have been interesting to have had Ross there as well but hopefully he'll be back for the Mayo game!

dont suppose they do live streaming for live games. Cant believe this is pay per view. Have sky package and Setanta sports not part of the package.

Just back from the game. Dublin were superb for the first 15 minutes and last 15 but were very poor in between. The reason they were so poor for so long is because they had 13 players in their own half with Kevin McManamon and Blaine Kelly left isolated in the forwards. Eamon Fennell was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch imo and kicked a few lovely scores off right and left. Delighted with the win but I reckon only about 5/6 of the players who started will be in the championship 15.

Agree with the above poster.Macauley is a very useful player to have around and is a total workhorse.O'Sullivan looks to be settling in well and McManamon's goal was a peach!

On the other hand how long do we persist with certain players who are clearly not up to the mark? How many chances does Bonner get? I put Casey in that group also. How Bonner remained on the field for 70 mins is baffling.Sure he did the easy things well but the talent is sadly lacking. He has been in the squad for 4 years? (open to correction here) I have never seen the man make any difference to a game.Personally i would have loved to see Dean Rock get another run out.

Anyone know why there were changes before the ball was thrown up? These guys carrying a knock?

    Stephen Cluxton

    ---AN Other
    Rory O'Carroll
    AN Other

    ---Griffin
    Cian O'Sullivan
    Barry Cahill---

    Eamon Fennell---AN Other

    AN Other
    Michael MacAuley
    Alan Brogan---

    ---Conal Keaney
    Bernard Brogan
    Kevin McManamon-

David Henry will be in the team, either at corner back or wing forward. If he's corner back, Paul Flynn will most likely play at wing forward. Ross O'Carroll and Philip McMahon will fight it out for the other corner back spot. Either can play at full back aswell. I've no idea who'll partner Fennell at midfield. Could be McConnell, Magee or Bastic. Unfortunately there aren't many options. Mark Davoren is an option at full forward aswell with Bernard Brogan moving to the corner.

Dont know what has happened to Paddy Andrews re Dublin situation but think he plays his best football up front. Would like to see more than one round of the club championship played this time round as it would players a decent run out. Wrapping them up in cotton wool in last two seasons hasnt worked.

decent win again, worrying first half after initial good start, really sat back and lost shape. Let Derry right back into it. Did well in second half, but a lot of that seemed to be Derry going to pieces. A solid enough performance but the way we blew hot and cold was old style Dublin, hoped we were moving beyond that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

Old style Dublin is correct but where we are correcting problem areas on the pitch, this comes at a price in areas where we have thrived...up front.

As alluded to in another post,Blaine Kelly and Kevin McManoman simply couldn't compete against 4 Derry backs for that spell when Dublin played defensively against a Derry midfield and forward line that only contains one semi household name James Kielt. We could have cut down on Derrys 7 point total had we not given 2-3 silly frees which let them back in after 15 minutes.I'm highly impressed by this bunch of lads and I feel the likes of Bryan Cullen,Darren McGee,Mossy Quinn,Dermot Connolly could be left on the bench regularly come championship.

The Dublin defense looks very mean and this is very refreshing.Lets hope they can keep it up.Fennell is best player on show alongside K McManoman,Cian O Sullivan,McAulay.

PS. Nobody should count out Flynn from the forward line just yet but I think Kevin McManoman will nail down a starting place. We need goal scorers and this player sure knows when a goal is on and how to take it.

assume Ross O Carroll will be a strong contender as well. Very formidable on the ball in last years county championship
