    Hi,

I came home yesterday to discover my les paul lying face down on the ground.
    Grrr.....

SO I picked it up at noticed that the rhythm pickup was all pushed inside the body of the guitar with a screw missing.

Does anybody know of a place in Galway where I could get this repaired and would you have any idea of how much it would cost?

That sucks man! You could try bringing it in to Modern Music and see if they could do anything for you. They've never let me down with any repairs which is more than I can say for other places in Galway.

I feel that it is my duty to warn the OP of the potential tears and heartbreak which may accompany a trip to the gentleman recommended by the above poster. My experience with him involved an extremely minor structural job to the neck of a bass, which I presumed wouldn't take longer than a week. After five weeks, I called in to find that the guitar hadn't even been removed from its case. It took a further month to regain possession of the instrument, upon which I was charged €30 for absolutely no difference at all!
A friend who had a problem with frets had similar experiences. He just doesn't seem to be that bothered with electric instruments and seems to think nothing of depriving you of your guitar for weeks on end.

In short, I advise against him.

He's actually the guy that I was referring to in my first post. I'm not going to go into details publically but suffice to say I wouldn't deal with him again and I would strongly advise anyone else against dealing with him.

Well I tried out that guy on shop street, Kieran Moloney.

Took my guitar in, asked him to fix it. Came back the next day and collected my repaired guitar.

No complaints from me. Did exactly what it said on tin!

He was nice enough to take the time to explain what work he had done for me and how to make adjustments if I needed.

Sorry to dig up an oul thread but my question is the exact same as the OP, modern music sent me to Maloneys, and he was less than helpful and throwing out a different quote ranging from 30e to 80e over the course of our conversation. On top of that he seemed to have no time for me and that me wanting to be a customer of his was a hinderence. Any other places?

Apologies for digging up this thread again, but does anyone know of any good guitar repair guys in the Galway/Mayo/Limerick area? I have a couple of raised frets on my beloved 25 year old SG and only want to deal with someone who is properly experienced to examine/fix it.

    Yes.. http://galway.yalwa.ie/ID_103146689/Doyle-Paul.html

    100%.

Tried that other place in shop street, your man wanted 80euro. Went into Pauls place thinking it was all acoustic stuff but he had my bro's electric guitar fixed fast and friendly. 25euro it cost but he changed wires, fixed the strap and did all the stuff that was needed to do and more. Can't recommend it enough, nice bunch in there and he seems to have 100's of guitar fittings and stuff so if u need a part replacement he probably has to hand.

Go there, enough said, I'm definitely going bk :p

Thanks, I'll give Paul a shout. Just want an assessment first. If it's just some fret levelling required I'm happy to do that myself but if the frets need to be taken out and refitted then its best left to a professional.

Pity I didn't know about him when I was sourcing parts to fit a pickguard to the SG. Ended up buying three pickguards off eBay which couldn't be modified properly, before I got one that fitted in Modern Music. Pays to shop locally I think.

Well my experience has been the exact opposite.Had an acoustic into Doyles before and it came back a disaster.Have been going to Moloneys since then and would highly recommend him.Always good jobs on 4 different instruments I own ..same experience goes for a few other people I know.

i came across this thread yesterday, im new to the west, and decided to go with paul doyle. i have to say i couldn't happier. he got straight to work and even talked me through every step. i got thrust rod adjustment, some fret filing, bridge and action adjustment and he only charged me 33 euro. his workshop was pure joy to be in for me, broken, half built instruments of all sorts everywhere and some jems of course. i highly recommend paul doyle. my acoustic is now back to mint condition and im a little educated too, a gent and a true craftsman

I just got some work done on a guitar today with Paul Doyle and I highly recommend him. My experience seems to have matched up with what -Vega- wrote. Paul was welcoming, courteous and completed the work very quickly at a great price. He even talked me through what he was doing as he did it. I will definitely use his services again in the future.

I got Paul to look at an issue on a guitar of mine recently. Was very courteous and helpful.

Big thumbs up from me for Modern Music. Brought my guitar in yesterday morning, for a new nut and general set up and it was ready for me this afternoon. Great service at a great price!

When you say "a general setup", do you know what they did? I'm just curious because I had a problem with fret buzz between the 17th and 22nd frets of a guitar which I brought to them. They had a quick look and told me I'd need to file the frets which wasn't something they did and isn't something I've ever done myself. Paul Doyle on the other had recognised straight away that it was a problem with one of the truss rods and, as I mentioned in my previous post on this thread, he sorted that as well as the string saddle height.

Don't get me wrong, I've bought three guitars, two amps and hundreds of strings and plectrums off Modern Music over the years and would heartily recommend them for that stuff. I just felt a bit let down over the fret buzz issue. I shudder to think of the mess that could have been made had I started filing the frets on their advice!

I told him myself what needed to be done, and apart from the nut, I got the action lowered, intonation sorted and there was a slight curve in the neck that needed to be adjusted. Stuff I could do at home but wouldn't trust myself!
Seems a bit odd that he would suggest to do something like filing the frets?
Where is Paul based? I've a guitar thats been sitting around for a while and could do with a bit of repair. I might drop it in to him and compare?

Yep, I was quite surprised. While their solution would have worked it could easily have gone wrong.

Here is a Google Maps link but basically go along Upper Dominic Street until you're past Apache Pizza and go down the laneway that has the yellow sign on it.

I couldn't recommend Paul Doyle's service more highly. I went into Moloney's just to ask about getting a service as I didn't have my guitar with me at the time, thinking I would bring it in later. His manner with me and the customer before me was horrendous in my opinion. Left me waiting around the shop for a couple of minutes without even looking at me after patiently wanting for 10-15 minutes while he dealt with the previous woman. When he did talk to me, I felt it was a hassle for him to give me a moment of his time, someone who was a prospective customer. Needless to say I felt no need to return with my guitar, so I went to Paul Doyle's who couldn't have been nicer and fixed up my guitar without a hitch.

Sorry for digging up this thread once again.

I've been to both Maloney's and Doyle's. Maloney didn't want to have anything to do with me.
Paul Doyle is always helpful but the few times he has had my guitars for minor jobs he's had them for weeks and I've gotten them backed damaged. the last one went in for a truss rod adjustment and fret levelling. After two weeks i went back to find my guitar taken apart and left on the counter. came back another two weeks later to find my guitar hadn't been touched since. He didn't know where the parts for the floyd rose were and had to go look for them, told me to come bak next week. I did and the guitar still hadnt been touched. One more week and i got it back, got charged 55 for the work only to discover damage in multiple spots to the finish and he hadnt touched the truss rod so the neck still had quite a bad bow in it.
I returned to mention it to him and he pointed to a sign that said he cant be held responsible for damage. He suggested I colour the wood under the chips black to hide them and cover it with glue to protect it. Super glue dissolves the nitro-cellulose finish and i had to find that out the hard way.
I wont ever be returning to him. He builds great instruments but his repair work is very hit and miss.

I haven't found anyone in Galway I trust to do a really good job with good communication on progress etc.

I just had a refret done by Gerry Haze in Lucan and he'll be getting all my business from now on.
