Two-Way Radios

I have been looking at upgrading my comms and have come across two variations of the same radio.

Here are the specs of each-

    1. UHF 430~470 MHz
Selectable Frequencies (5/10/12, 5/20/25 kHz steps)

    2. VHF 136~174MHz
Selectable Frequencies (5/10/12, 5/20/25 kHz steps)

So which one would be more suitable for use in the UK and Ireland?

    Cheers if you can help...

Maybe this could be moved to technical?

Well for a start, I'd suggest looking up the Wiki entry for PMR 446 and taking it from there.

Basically, PMR 466 is a European initiative to allow for unlicensed operation of two-way radio in a small and very specific band - namely 446 MhZ hence the 446 bit in PMR 446. You are limited to 8 channels within 446, so not the entire frequency, although with CTCSS you can seperate this into sub-bands.

In short, anything outside of those 8 PMR channels will require an spectrum license. Similarly, anything operating at over .5w will also require a license since PMR 446 radios are restricted to .5w (roughly 5km over flat terrain with little obstruction, realistically 1km).

Of the two radios, the UHF one is the one you want ... BUT it is capable of broadcasting outside of PMR 446 frequencies, so you will require a license for it to operate legally.

Thanks for the feedback. I was aware of the license for the power outout but was not sure of the UHF VHF settings.

    Cheers!
