I have a question that I hope someone can help with ?? My mum is 52 and a few years ago had to give up work because of long term illness. because of this she could no longer afford the mortgage repayments so she sold the house, paid off the mortgage and moved in with her partner. She has since split from her partner and is now renting by herself. nearly all the proceeds from the sale of her house have been spent but she seems to think because she sold her house that she made herself homeless ... she doesn't want to move in with me or my sister as she reckons the kids would do her head in so my question is is she entitled to any state assistance to help with her rent ??

She may be entitled to at least something. Selling her house didn't make her homeless (although it often would), the break-up made her homeless. Her income and assets will be taken into account, but I think the first €30,000 of assets are essentially ignored. I'm not sure of her exact situation, but she might be entitled to work part time and still get Disability Benefit.

She would need to talk to the local community welfare officer about rent allowance. If ye speak to the local citizens information office first, you might be able to get some practical advice. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/social-welfare/social-welfare-payments/supplementary-welfare-schemes/rent_supplement

For those reading this in similar situations with a mortgage a similar mortgage interest supplement is also available for, I think, a year.
