Hi lads would appreciate your thoughts on the use of the 300 win mag at competitive 1000 yard shooting. I know the 7mm wsm and the 6.5x 284 are the biz at this range but how would the 300 fair. Thinking about gettin one built so it ll be heavy so not concerned about recoil. Also how good would match grade factory ammo be at this range i know if i want to get the most out of it will have to reload but just curious. Use match grade ammo through my 308 and she ll do sub 2" groups at 600yards but would prob do better with reloads also. Thanks

When I first started going to the Midlands range I spoke to a man from up North.
He told me he was using factory ammo but for the long range shooting BUT he pulled all the heads to 20thou off the lands and that it improved the factory ammo no end.

It's a good round, but it's never going to be competitive. The various 6.5mm and particularly the 7mm rounds are just so much more ballistically useful and have less recoil that running a .30 calibre for long range target shooting just doesn't make any sense, particularly when there are comparable weight bullets like the 180gr Berger VLD.

I've heard very good things about the Federal Gold Medal Match 190gr Sierra Matchking in .300 Win Mag for long range tactical shooting and the like. It's quality stuff, if that's the route you want to go down, but it's just not the ideal round. For hunting, by all means, but if I were building a long-range rifle, it wouldn't be a .30 calibre anyway. There's a reason the 6.5mm and 7mm rounds rule the roost.

Thanks for your replies lads, was speaking with Fergal White earlier and decided id get a 6.5 x 55 built. Had one before in a tikka supervarmint and loved it it was v accurate and with Fergal doin the build on new rifle am confident it will a seriously accurate piece of kit. At the mo thinkin of a 30" krieger barrel with 1 in 8 twist, surgeon action(or something else with remington footprint as want to use mc millian stock on this build) jewel trigger and hopefully a v understanding fiancee :D but some how i doubt it:rolleyes:
