    hi folks

    this might be an odd one for ye.

    I recently built myself a htpc and put ubuntu on it. i'm chuffed with it and have been watching movies and all that. I've also been doing a good share of net browsing and playing stuff like tetris on it. The thing is I find that my eyes are burning from it. They're fine if I'm just watching movies or other stuff, it just seems to be a problem when I'm using the pc side of it. does that make any sense at all?

    I have a LG 40" LCD 720p. I've never found it tiresome watching TV before. I'm not using the TV any more these days than I would have been anyway so its definetly to do with the interent usage on it. I'm sitting reasonably close to it, I have no trouble reading it or anything like that, it;s crystal clear.....but my friggin eyes are killing me from it.

    its bloody annoying, anyone else have any experience of this?

    ta

    It sounds like you are suffering from eye strain. You need to increase the text size on your screen to a more comfortable level. Play around with the settings to find a comfortable fit for you.

    I use a 42" tv and have my web browser zoomed to 200% and windows text size set to 125%.

    It's also possible that tv on a big screen has a changing degree of contrast but webpages like forums etc can be unformly bright, can become quite intense on a bigscreen.

    could be a couple of things, i would imagine brightness plays a big part, especially if its dynamic as it can sort of flicker quite quickly.
    the other is that a tv refresh rate could be lower than a pc.

    lastly, using a large screen at a, relatively, low resolution can cause eye strain.
    think about, you would run a 19" monitor at 1920x1200 (10:9 / 115 sq inch) yet you are running a 40" at 1366x768 (511sq inch)

    the 19" has 20000 pixels per square inch, whereas the 40" has 1/10th of that at 2000 pixels per square inch

    your eyes could be strained because of any of those

    Seems to me that the activity is the cause.

    TV-> no problem
    Gaming, surfing-> eye strain

    I'd say you concentrate too much during the latter and you don't BLINK.
    That's why your eyes dry out and start hurting.

    I have the same after a long day at work behind a LCD.

    Only thing you can do is be aware of it and blink more, or take more breaks.

    I dunno Wcool, I spend all day behind an LCD in work, and would often go home and spend a couple of hours on the laptop while 'da wife' watches next top model followed by big brother:eek:. I've never had eye fatigue before.

    subway raises a few good points I think regarding refresh rates and resolution. I changed the brightenss and resolution and even the zoom size of the browser. I think maybe the brightness might have a lot to do with it. the white background of a webpage is fairly glaring, I think that might be a lot of it.

    thanks for the suggestions
