Hi all i am a complete beginner at knitting and have just completed a baby hat - very very proud of myself.

I would love if someone could point me in the right direction of some very easy (and cute) baby patterns, in particular I would love to do a baby blanket but haven't a clue how to go about it - would i need very very long needles?

You can knit lots of small squares and sew them together to make a blanket, it makes it less daunting to do. Debbie Bliss has lots of easy patterns like this book. It's a good book as you learn a new knitting technique with each pattern.

Check out Ravelry as well, it has lots of free patterns there that you can search. It's a great website with lots of forums and groups you can join so you can meet other Irish Knitters.

    Hi Garden,

I strongly recommend www.ravelry.com. Amazing site - gazillions of patterns, that have a difficulty rating, how to guides and extremely active forums if you run into problems.

There are some brilliant videos on youtube and about.com on knitting, and you can check if you're technique is rigth or learn new skills. It's a lot easier than reading instructions from a book - actually watching someone.

In response to your specific pattern request, I recommend a 'feather and fan' pattern - this is easy but gives a lacy effect that is appropriate for a baby blanket.
Or, and this looks just as good - do good old garter stitch (knit both sides) on say 4mm needles and do stripes of lots of lovely colours. Always a winner - and very individual.
If you use circular needles, you can do an entire blanket in one go, as they've plenty of room for the full number of stitches required.

In my experience of knitting baby blankets - I normally use a double knitting weight, and need about 400-500grams - depends on pattern.

    I hope this helps.
    Enjoy your knitting :-)

    Hi
I have always wanted to make a knitted patchwork quilt / blanket. I have knitted before in school etc but have no idea how to cast on / off.

I am looking for a book that could guide me through the basics and give me ideas on blocks to knit etc.. oh and hopefully some guideance on putting it together at the end.

I know this is probably alot to expect form one work so even if you could recommend even two books that would be great.

Mods: if you think I should have posted in a new thread please feel free to move this.

    Thanks in advance
    Little Miss

    @Little Miss Cutie
Almost all knitting books include a how to knit section which explain the techniques needed for the patterns in the book. The suggestions made by Waternews above are great too. A quick search on google or you tube for how to knit will bring up loads of tutorials on how to knit. There are many free patterns if you search as well.

A quick search of amazon brings up this book which seems to be what you're looking for. Amazon will have many similar books if you have a look around.
I have the crochet version of this book and it is very good and clear. I assume the knitted version is similar.
