How do the points made in this thread about NGOs and Volenteering why can't you volunteer abroad for free? relate to the numerous Irish aid agencies.

Are they primarily there to take in money to feed their senior managers etc?

Which ones are genuine and why is it that there is not just one single agency?

    They don't relate at all.
Those agencies are not there to support volunteers. When the swine flu broke it wasn't volunteers people were calling on to save the day - it was well paid experts. Development is not particularly well paid, but thy generally are experts.
Why should it be any different when millions of people are dying needlessly?
Development is a complex issue and to be a policy maker one has to have a very good knowledge of the issues.

That thread is full of people who are not looking to become experts, or have a career in it. They mostly want to do it for a little while, and then get on with their lives. They're essentially asking to take part and for that they have to pay. Funds should be spent on people who are trained and experienced, not people on a gap year.

As for why there isn't only one. Well there is no one way to bring about development. At least with lots of different organisations they take on different issues, they work in different ways, they keep each other on their toes - each one wants to have the best projects, the most success.
You seem to be suggesting there should be only one. Funny, seeing as the biggest criticism the UN gets is that it's too big. People believe smaller grassroots organisations would do a better job. And you're suggesting we put them all together. Can't please everyone!

I guess we all have to take this chance.

I have not only given to the recognised charities but have a friend who travels out there in person and provides not only medical help but has to bring a bribery bag for the customs who are so wicked and warped as we all suspect.

I hope we can all consider that most recognised charities will provide and we can only hope and pray that our help will provide help to those who are in dispair.

    Please continue to give.
