Hedge words

Or whatever you want to call them.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Like#As_a_hedge

I have to put up with this **** every day on the Luas and in work. Sometimes it seems as if the people that use the word 'like' are going for some ****ing world record.

Is Ireland one of the worst for this type of ****ty conversation or is it as bad in other countries?

Early morning rant and I'm expecting lots of witty replies.

    I blame the education system.

But no, it's as bad in other countries. I did a college project on it and results showed that like, everyone was, you know, as bad as, more or less actually, literally everyone else.

Indeed. There is an equivalent in every language. They use Yani a lot in Arabic speaking countries.

A bit of a rant but I'm still curious to see if the same happens in proper countries like Germany etc.

Social cleansing is the only answer to this problem.

Every single person should be interviewed for approximately thirty minutes.

For the duration of the interview a burly gentleman shall be resting a double barrelled shotgun on the shoulder of the candidate pointing at there head.

The interview will consist of fairly basic questions about yourself and lifestyle ect..

The second the subject utters a single one of those "Ross O Carroll Kelly"esqe words...

    BOOOM..
    Both barels.

Some might think I'm being extreme...
But god damnit, the Gene pool in this country needs some chlorine and this is as good a place to start as any.

You are probably guilty too OP but just don't notice it ;)
    Ask your friends.

And yes, it's common in other countries too, at least countries where I understand a bit of the language.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 208 ✭✭AttackThePoster

I don't think I am. I rarely use something like that as a crutch.

    "Do you know, like"

Yes, it's the only solution. Once again, thank you.

What's the German equivalent for this sort of carry on?

I do enjoy sitting down at the back of the bus beside a pair of teenage girls and counting to see which of them says "like" the most before the journey ends. That, or "ohmygod," which many of them seem to be able to say in a single syllable these days. An actual sentence I remmeber from, ohmygod, like a year ago:

"And like ohmygod, did you see what Claire like, had her hair like, like the last two nights? I was like, ohmygod."

Use earphones or earplugs f you can't overcome an unfortunate addiction to eavesdropping shit conversations on public transport.

    Works a treat.

There's also that peculiar Canadian expression, eh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,380 ✭✭✭geeky

As far as I know, everyone (not just Irish people) uses certain words to buy them more time while they think what they'll say next. If we only began sentences when we knew exactly what we were going to say, conversation would be like those god-awful satelite link-ups you see on the news where there's a time delay. That'd be far more annoying than the occasional 'like'.

Some people are more extreme than others of course - I'm better than I used to be, but an old classmate (a very smart guy, incidentally) used to clock up the 'like's at a ferocious rate. But having worked abroad and with people of all levels of intelligence, I can safely say it's a universal thing.

It's common in all languages. In Polish we use "co nie" which functions like question tags we don't have, or "wiesz" which means "you know"

In Turkish they use "Hadi" or "Yani" or "sey"

Y'know, I did think about leaving the wording a little less "open to interpretation," but I figured, nah, this is AH, we're all mature here :)

Hedge words are deliberately chosen for mitigation purposes as opposed to filler which is just to occupy the downtime between actual words.

    'Like' can function as either.

But then again, this is not the lingusitics forum so there's no point being pedantic.

No, but I am suggesting that you're using it wrongly. You linked to two lines on the use of 'like' as a hedge word as opposed to the page on hedge words themselves.

(and several times you repeated a question that had been answered - the old attention span is lacking I'd say)

Just as well. People have been banned for seriousness before.
