i herd sumwhere that if you get a 4" wavin pipe cut it to 4ft put a stop end on it, put a tin of sardines into it,stand it as vertical as possible, that when the rat goes in he cant climb back out,

any one ever here of that, does it work?

Im sure if you made it long enough it would do for rats as they wouldnt be able to catch grip on the inside of the pipe. My guess anyway.

The only problem i see with wavin and rats is their ability to eat their way through it.

i agree, i dont think wavin would them, even at an angle i think they would manage to either climb out or eat out

Eat out through a 4'' wavin sewer pipe?
If you checked it every day, morning and evening. They'd hardly manage to chew through it that quick would they?

the size of the hole they dig around here i reckon it wouldnt be long before they would get out of the pipe, i would say the could claw back up the pipe anyway, best way to catch rats is the live traps you get from mac eoin in dingle, then get the trap and place in a barrel of water for 5 mins, does the job every time

Here you go...LOOK We used to do something similar back home in Australia but we used a beer bottle with peanut butter stuffed in the end instead of the falling ramp...wrap chicken wire around the bottle half way up so the rat has grip and when he ventures out further past the grippy wire and on to the narrow part of the bottle he will slip off and meet his end in a bucket of water..

I remember the auld fellows at home making a similar trap with the pivoting ramp to catch rats.

When they caught two rats they would remove the bridge to the bucket so no more rats could get up.

They would leave the two rats swim around in the bucket until one weakened. Eventually the stronger rat would attack, kill and eat the weaker rat.

Now, they maintained they had a cannibal rat. This rat, when released would only attack and kill rats from there on.....so they tipped the bucket over and released him.

They always maintained that you could recognise it afterwards as it would be much bigger than a normal rat.

Don't know if it worked or not........they maintained it did.
