O2 iPhone Unlimited Data Tarriff

    Hi All,

I was just browsing O2's website when I realised that they are now offering unlimited Data with their iPhone price plans (see here). As an O2 iPhone customer who is frustrated with the current 1GB cap on data considering O2 in the UK offers unlimited data I was very interested in this development and called straight away to see could I switch over to one of the new plans. The lady I got speaking to in customer care told me that this is a promotional offer until March and there is no guarantee that this will continue thereafter and even may be reduced, maybe even back down to 1GB.
Now, on their site, there is no mention of this being a promo offer anywhere and seems to be quite clear that this is what the plan offers and will continue to offer. I told her I will wait until March to find out whether, if any, permanent cap changes will take place but find it a bit suspicious as I will be then be a customer with them for six months in which case I do not have the right to switch plans, at least, without incurring additional costs (see section 'Changing Plans' here). Can anyone help me find out the truth of what is going on here.

    John.

    Fixed spelling mistakes

Yeah people seem to hold polarised opinions on the iPhone. For me it comes down to usability which IMO the iPhone wins hands down. You might think this is strange but I wish it was a Microsoft product as I am very comfortable with the .NET framwork + C# instead of Objective C / Cocca.

I think it wouldn't be to far fetched to think about Microsoft entering the mobile market with its Zune device which the HD version really giving apple a run for its money. Think XBox 360 and Sony's PS.

First of all - the iPhone usability comes from the fact that it makes everything so simplistic and as such is very frustrating for anyone who wants to take advantage of their phone - think guest account Vs. Admin account on windows.

As for MS and Zune - well MS have had Windows mobile out for quite a while now and you only have to look at the threads here about Android to understand how WM is going down another level in the Mobile O/S premier league.

I'm sorry Jimmy but you are talking out of that place where the sun don't shine. You start by stating the obvious "iPhone usability comes from the fact that it makes everything so simplistic", well duh!
Second just because you would like your phone to boot to a b&w bash prompt dosen't mean the other 99.9 % of the population does.
The fact is that until hardware vendors move away from marketing by specification the dream of things like ubiqutious computing will not happen although I can see this taking plase this decade. Apple has taken a lead in this area and you will see a lot more manufacturers following.

    Dell Device
    546546 JigaHertz
    345 DDR3 RAM :confused::confused:

    Apple Device
    It does Pictures
    And Email :):)

Sure us geeks will always go for the hi spec cheap price option (I would never consider buying a mac because I know its just overpriced and underpowered) but we are only a very small segment of the overall population. New Interface Technologies like multitouch and voice recognition will accellerate this reboot of the hardware market and create the 'Digital home' that has been promised for so long.

Don't ever underestemate Microsofts ability to pull a comeback. They have mases of cash to throw at what ever tickles their fancy.

It would be a mistake to write off MS. Winmo never had much of a presence here (worldwide really) outside of the enterprise market, but rumours suggest that we'll see Winmo 7 being on show at Barcelona in the next few days and MS targetting a wider user base. Furthermore, the suggestion is that we'll see it in two flavours one tailored for enterprise the other for casual users, with the casual benefitting from Zune and XBox integration.

Back to the OP's original question price plans are here.
    http://www.o2online.ie/wps/wcm/myconnect/O2/Home/Shop/Phones/iPhone/iPhone+3G+8GB/Pay+monthly/

The unlimited they speak of is 3Gb per month! As well as that on the 40 euro pack you get free calls and texts to 02 and voicemail, 150 minutes to other networks, 350 texts (250 via Web/Cabbage/EIRTEXT ) and 10 MMS.

Its pretty good for 40 a month.

To me, O2 use a very different meaning of "unlimited" to most people.

They mean: limited to 3Gb, no tethering, only iPhone apps usage.

I would take unlimited to mean: no limits!

Perhaps I am just out of step with modern Marketing.

From reading their online forum, the offer is here to stay. It does, however, require you to lock yourself into a new 18-month contract in order to sign up to the new Advance plans.

No, I think it is down to O2 being blatantly misleading! Possibly even illegal (false advertising)?

They all do it regarding unlimited. The regulator is being typically toothless in dealing with it.

I've reported them to advertising standards anyway. Got a letter from them advising that they were investigating.....

All the mobile operators get away with this blatant false advertising. The best thing to do is register a complaint with the asai.

O2 have had a number of simply untruthful and false ads recently, they just don't care about whether they are actually true or not.

They previously advertised unlimited data when it was only 1GB, then slightly changed the ad when they were caught out about it. The asai did nothing about it then either.

I called them again just there and asked about the 'Unlimited Data'. After a few minns of her enthusiastically telling me how great it was I kept asking her to define what exactly she meant by fair usage. She finally told me to hold and came back to tell me that 'Unlimited' actually was 3GB.
Now, I could handle the term unlimited being stretched when referring to eircoms bitstream broadband product with fair usage being 80-100 GB but this is taken the piss. On the page on their site where I first saw this, nowhere did I say this, not one asterisk to point to small print underneth to say there was a fair usage let alone that by fair usage they mean a pityfull 3GB. I also made a complaint using the info in an above post but I switched contracts anyway an three is at least a bit better than one.
