took the car into advance pitstop for the the free pre-nct checklist and was told that i need a new cat convertor and four new shocks , a cv boot and tracking
They are lookin at around 900 euro for the work , never had any problems with the car.
Its a 1998 toyota glanza turbo well looked after and drives like a dream . do you think i should just put her in for the test and hope for the best as no way can afford 900 quid

A retest is a lot cheaper i dont know why anyone sends a car for a pre test pure rip off.

I know yours was free op but its just a chance for them to get any work at all out of you

And if the work needs to be done shop around

I always found Advance to be scandalously expensive

Yes. Advance are shysters, a family member left there because he was the only mechanic there (the others were just knuckle draggers who could hardly hold a spanner), he was sick of his pay being related to how much he could "sell" to customers.

I put a car through the NCT that was burning oil like crazy, had major knocking coming from the suspension etc... it passed no probs. Its worth just bringing it in for the NCT and have people who do not have a vested interest in selling you things tell you what needs to be done. Pre-NCT my hole. Why do people do this ?

check your fluid levels, bulbs, tyres and a few other bits and pieces, and keep it regularly serviced and you will most likely have no problem passing the NCT

tell Advance where to stick their pre-NCT scam

Just be glad you didnt pay for a pre NCT.
Ok, we will give them the benefit of the doubt on the cv boot with tracking but a new CAT, have they even the ability to diagnose that?
4 new shocks? Id be surprised. See if they are leaking. If not, there is a fair chance that they will pass. Afterall, you would know if all your shocks were f*cked.
The NCT test is the cheapest check you will even have done. If it fails you are only paying half the test fee to get a full list of definite faults that will fail you.

A new cat costs 300...they are charging you 600 for 4 shocks, a cv joint, and to do the tracking?
Yet another example of the nonsense that always seems to seep from the yellow septic tank that is advance pitstop. My brother went to them with a problem-there was a light staying on on the dash. They told him to keep driving. Sure enough, the engine blew. ****!
Now, my bro was innocent enough to take their word for it, that the supposed professionals might actually know what they are doing? Big & costly mistake..

So...i presume the advance pitstop in tullamore is about average, if that be the case, i personally wouldn't trust them to provide anything more than a puncture repair. If i had absolutly no choice.

There's a guy in a lane that joins dorset street to mountjoy street, andreas, he is russian i think, he sorted my car out when i failed the nct, and very reasonable and straight work. But yes...run it through the nct first, DO NOT give those con artists so much as a look of your beloved glanza.

Do the test and see what she fails on. Then if you need parts, get them somewhere like here:

    http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m19b0s0p0

and get a local mechanic to fit them. Shouldn't be too expensive.

The best you can do is run it through the NCT see how it gets on and find a reliable honest mechanic to use in future. It sounds like they're trying to take you for a ride which wouldn't be unprecidented.

    Glazers Out!

I would bring a car to Advance Pitstop to get tyres changed, an exhaust and maybe an oil change, other than that I wouldn't have them do any work on my car. As was said put it through the NCT and then fix only what if anything fails.

Funny thing is that 4 f*cked shocks will pass as the test only works on inbalance

Seconding what your saying id imagine the op would know if his shocks were

f*cked especially on a Glanza, as for pre up the bum tests don't start me off

Dont bother getting that done until AFTER the NCT OP. Send her through and find out where your having problems if you even are at all!

Put it through the test first, lets us know how you get on with.

Pitstop quoted me E900 to get the car through the NCT - i only went in to get a headlight bulb replaced and the light alligned.

the car failed on two things, the bulb they fixed and the front water sprayer. got the new motor for the sprayer, fitted for E30.

Stick the car in and see what happens

I keep saying it - the best pre-NCT test is the test itself. It costs 50 quid to test it, and if it fails the re-test only costs €27.50. its the best €77.50 you could spend on a car.

    Forget about your pre-tests.

I remember a mate getting a pre NCT check and spending 700 quid only to fail NCT.

I got brakes done on my old car last year at a local mechanic (not my usual) He gave me a list of things that needed doing including wipers, even though I had put new wipers on the week before.

Had my NCT last month and all it needed was a balljoint.

Put it through the test op as others have said. We were told the cat was gone on a fiesta we have at home and Ford quoted my mother 900 euro to replace it of course she walked away. That was 3 years ago, It flew through the nct at the time, my sister recently but it through again and no emissions problem 3 years on from being told the cat was gone.

If you are able before the test I would advise you to get some carb cleaner and clean your MAF (mass air flow sensor). This is the source of a lot of emission fails and not the cat. Despite this garages always change the cat first only for the car to fail again.

Cleaning it can often sort out problems with the MAF as it gets dirty over time. I have seen it myself with my car being sluggish and the engine light on. I removed the MAF and cleaned it. A day later the engine light was off and the car was running much much better.

A few years ago i had a similar experience with Advance P/S.
At the time i owned an imported Honda Integra.
I took into Advance for a pre NCT inspection.
I dropped it in first thing and called in the afternoon to see how things where going. The person i spoke to asked me if i was sitting before he began to read off the list of work to be completed! All i can say is the bill was going to more than the car was worth!I went and collected it,took to another garage and got a 2nd opinion.I was delighted to find that there where a few issues which where easily and most importantly cheaply corrected.
I never returned there again and would never recommend them to anyone.
    Good Luck with your NCT.

Thread is nearly three years old. I assume the OP took the nct by now.
