How can I calculate how long I have left on JSB?

I qualified for JSB back in September, getting about €132 a week (due to living family home and under 25). I managed to get a one day a week job just before Christmas, meaning my payment was reduced to €105 or so a week, and I was switched to casual job seeker's benefit. Now the odd week I have worked a day more here and there where I can, but essentially from end of December right up to April (when JSB is officially supposed to run out) I will have worked one full day a week unless things change drastically or I can find a full-time job.

My (long-winded):o question is whether my JSB will be extended by a bit due to my working and if so how do I calculate this, or will I just be assessed for JSA come April?

    Many thanks!

    Hi Tommy

They won't extend your job seekers benefit past when your PRSI contributions run out, however, you can apply for job seekers allowance once your job seekers benefit runs out. This is means tested however and can taKe some time to process.

You're better off makin sure you apply well in advance of your stamps running out.

Best of luck and I hope you find work soon!!

Thanks for the reply Matt! But given I am working one day a week are my PRSI contributions not increasing as I go, even as they are being depleted (just depleted slightly slower)? Is it possible to apply well in advance before JSB runs out, I mean do I just fill out the means test form 2-3 weeks ahead assuming by the time they get round to it my JSB will be over?:o Thanks

Um, think you could be right there man. Probably best to ask SW how much more it would entitle you to. Was in a similar situation myself, got about 7 months into my 12 months worth of stamps and was told I had to apply for JSA once my JSB runs out. Yes it should be possible for you to apply for JSA in advance of your JSB expiring. All I would do is explain to them that you have still not managed to find employment and you want to make sure that you don't have too much of a waiting time once your JSB expires.

It's the means test that takes all the time, so @ least if ya get the ball rolling, u shouldn't be waiting quite as long.

Best of luck and I hope you find a job soon!

    Hi there,

JSB is normally awarded for approx 12 months, normally when decided upon the department will issue its decision and state exactly how many days you will get based on PRSI Contributions. I am unsure if your working part time will extend this, i think the initial assessment is made on the contributions you made prior to being unemployed, this said, any stamps being earned, even part time will be taken into consideration on the date your JSB expires.

My question if i may? I am on JSB having been made redundant about 6 months ago, despite numerous applications, phone calls etc, i am not confident of finding anything soon. Single and a mortgage holder (thank god its small and covered by Mortgage Payment Protection insurance) i am concerned about the JSB ending in about 4 months or so. Is it the case i have to apply for JSA or does this automatically come into play? i do understand its means tested. Any advice appreciated.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

Thanks for the advice, I will suss it out for sure anyway next month. In terms of your JSB ending, I think what the above poster was saying was that you can't apply for it until JSB ends, but that it takes so long to process it would make sense to send it in a few weeeks early. As far as I know you get a letter telling JSB is expiring, but maybe someone can confirm this?

Yeah you're right there Tommy @ least that's what social welfare told me! I had similar concerns when my JSB was about to expire. I think it's wise to be on the ball yourself as well as I reckon these state run departments might not send these letters all the time, have heard of this happening a few times:)

Social welfare told me that I would have to apply for JSA once my JSB runs out. It's means tested, meaning that one would not necesserily be eligible @ all. Got a job before I had to find out so I was blessed that way.

    Hope ya get sorted
