    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of selling a car through the auctions?
I know Merlin would be the most well known, but has anyone used Gallaghers who started up recently?

GF selling her car and can't get any interest in a private sale so wondering which would be best to go with, Merlin fee's are a lot higher than Gallaghers but since they're only new wondering would it even sell there.

    Cheers

The question is, why isn't your OH's car selling? Have you a link to the ad? What car is it, and how is it priced? There's no reason for a car not to sell unless its something completely mental or its in bad shape.

It's a 01 SEAT with over 80k miles on it, decent condition.
Issue is she's the fifth owner and she's had a few problems in last few months and she's lost confidence in the car, all fixed but it cost a bit to do and she's worried it's just going to become a bottomless pit for money and can't afford it

High mileage high owners isn't attracting people, know it'd put me off if looking private, and she hasn't much cash to trade up so nobody would take it on trade in.

She now has another car and can't afford to leave it sitting there if there's no interest and it could take an age to sell in this climate, a mechanic friend told her to put it into auction as many mechanics would buy small cars there and either use the parts or do up and sell on.

At this stage it's needs to be sold so it looks to be auctions for it

just put it on donedeal cheap, whatever you think it's worth, advertise it for less.

    Give us an idea of

    • Asking price
    • Mileage 80k (thats not high enough to put anyone off)
    • Condition
    • Engine size

Cars will sell on the above.

Selling at auction means your selling "as is" and the price of the bids will reflect that meaning youll get a low value.

Your better off to sell privately if you can but i just have a feeling that its price or your in some way raising a red flag when selling.

As a private seller he is selling the car as is anyway.

Also in relation to your criteria for selling a car you forgot 'presentation';)

Did you try putting it online on places like Adverts.ie (free) and DoneDeal (€3)? Get it washed and waxed, and a valet inside if it's not already spotless, and take some good photos. I am surprised something like this is not selling assuming the asking price is reasonable. The mileage isn't that bad.

selling it privately will get you a larger return but it may take a while longer.

selling at auction will yield a smaller return but you will sell it way quicker

why not bring it down to merlin auctions in kylemore and naas and get them to look at it and give you a value. if you like price, they will but it from you under their 'car to cash' scheme or you could offset it against the price of a a new jammer in the auction!

I'm guessing that the OP's gf is trying to recoupe the recent money she spent on the car. Unfortunately this may be more than the car is worth and hence the price is putting alot of buyers off.

5 owners on a 9 year old car is not normal but not unheard of either. Also 80k is below average for a 9 year old car. Of course all this is just a guess until the OP posts a link to the advert here.
