hi all now that the season is coming to a close i'm thinking about changing my rifle.

i'v had my steyr for just over a year now and its done me proud, but its very long with the moderator on and i'd like a shorter barrel and maybe a heavy barrel, threaded for a mod.

anyone here have a remington 700, there seams to be a hugr range of remmys there .

    i also have a tika t3 tactical 20" barrel and a t8 mod, i love this rifle

i'm thinking .308 but .270 keeps popping up in the back of my mind

any advise or banter on this subject is welcome . cheers lads

This is what you should be looking at the new rifle from CZ in 308 only.

The CZ 550 UCS, Urban Counter Sniper (don't you just love the name) is a fresh rifle concept built with a compact profile for maneuverability, reduced weight and “cold first shot” predictability.
The rifle uses proven bench-rest principles by using a short stiff free floated 16” bull barrel with a target crown for consistent barrel harmonics and amazing accuracy. This barrel is enhanced with a Surefire muzzle break for soft recoil and QD suppressor compatibility.
A Bell & Carlson fiberglass stock, aluminum bedding block, oversized bolt handle, polished action, Teflon coating and a crisp single stage trigger complete the package.
The balance and maneuverability of the CZ550 Counter Sniper make this rifle ideal for many tactical situations. Includes 10 round detachable magazine.

nice rifle, you are on the same page as me regarding maneuverability but is 16" not a bit short for longer ranges

custom is the way to go...You get what you want then...

If you need the rifle for Stalking weight will be an issue. A few weeks ago a fella approached us with exactly the same issue. Goal was a rifle with 18 - 20" heavy barrel that can shoot targets to 600m and is still fine for deer stalking. Choice fell to 308 Howa Varmint, that he chopped down.
The 308 works very well with short barrels.
We made him an ultra light and ultra strong stock made with 90% carbon fiber, 5% Kevlar and 5% Glass. The stock with buttpad and studs weighed 823grams and saved 600grams compared to the original stock. Thats the weight of a scope.

The remmy 700 action is also quite light and would make a nice rig.
I'm working on my remmy foxing/stalking rifle at the moment, but it'll have the normal sporter barrel in 243.

Huge differences in moderator sizes and weights. I'm very happy with a CMM steel A-tec for my 308 that weighs 470 grams and is nice and tidy. Moderation is also one of the best.

Just to add the CZ 550 Urban Counter Sniper is $2500
Also RPA do a short barrel 308 hunting rifle but the price £2600

At that sort of money you can get a good custom rifle made for you.
Or what Edi has said buy an over the counter rfle and get it pimped up.

Nice thing about getting one "pimped" is that one can use the rifle as is first and as cash flow allows one can add bits.

Generally I think the sporter barrels are too light and the varmint barrels too heavy. Something inbetween would make a lot of sense.
I have a Lothar Walther heavy magnum sporter profile on my 308 which is
the compromise that is missing in most factory rifles.

Another point... at the moment one can find cheap second hand rifles.
If you find a remmy for around 500 and get a custom barrel fitted for another 500, you'd be way better off than the new varmint rifle for at least 1000 Euro... or?

Who is the dealer for A-tec mods in Ireland? Or do I have to go further afield?
I am kind of kicking myself that I didn't get one in Norway when I was over there last year, they aren't that expensive even in Norway.

Not sure who imports them into Ireland now.
I think Jackson Rifles in UK has the agency. Syss and Jaeger sporting both copied the older version of the A-tec moderator and are selling them at a great price. Good over the barrel type moderator. Roedale in Germany is bringing out his own moderator which will be more like a CMM A-tec.
We'll know more after the IWA.
