Do you suffer from psoriasis or ezema by any chance? Because both of these conditions cause that. So treating them would probably help.

I don't.....as I said with polish or extensions it's obviously invisible...but not very nice when my own nails are long and untreated.

Are you talking about little white lines? Like this :

I believe they are caused by a lack of iron or zinc in the diet.

If that's not what you're talking about, I have no idea.

Or do you mean ridges, that you can actually feel?

In my opinion they are caused by a lack of vitamins and minerals in the diet. A general multivitamin will help as it is probably a combination of Vit D (reason your nails get stronger in the sun) or zinc and iron as the other poster said.

In saying that a couple of friends of mine swear by Dr Udo's oil for hair, skin and nails. Its meant to be the perfect combination of Omega oils 3 and 6 and is really meant to show a big improvement. I wouldn't recommend taking the oil straight as it tastes nasty but you can mix it with OJ or else buy it in capsule form.

I suppose if you could take both a multivitamin and the Udos oil you would get the best results.

several possible things you can try (i have ridges too) first i would buy a good buffer and buff your nails maybe once a week ( i found the bodyshop multiway buffer block the best, its dear but lasts for literally years) this works great for me. joint first is take vitamin supplements such as general multivits and maybe some oil supplements like fish oils or evening primrose. other than that you could you a ridge filler like mavala ridge filler (but i think this is intended more for horizontal ridges rather than vertical). also if youre going down the supplements route some people find silica supplements work wonders for their nails, hair and skin. hpe this helps:pac:

I agree with previous posts, try buffing twice a week or so! usually gets rid of ridges

No, white spots on the nails can be a sign of a zinc deficency.

Vertical lines to the nails are caused by damage to the nail matrix ( the living part of the nail under the cuticle where the growth of the nail begins) .
If it is on all the nails thought it may be a sign that you are run down or have a vitamin deficency.
Is it on all your nails or just a few?

Also buffing will imporve the appearance of the nail, its best to look into why its happening also though.
